The standard explanation

Jodo uses a plain wooden staff about 128 centimeters long and 2.4 centimeters thick. Practice is done in pairs: one person attacks with a wooden sword, and the other uses the staff to control the attack. It traces back to a school said to have been founded in the early 1600s. Today it is run by the All Japan Kendo Federation, alongside kendo and iaido.

A full paragraph you can read aloud

Jodo is a Japanese martial art built around a simple wooden staff called a jo. The staff is about 128 centimeters long and 2.4 centimeters thick, with no blade and no decoration. In practice, two people work together. One plays the attacker with a wooden sword, and the other uses the staff to meet the attack.

The goal is not to strike first, but to respond to the opponent and bring them under control. The art traces back to a school said to have been founded in the early 1600s by a swordsman named Muso Gonnosuke. According to legend, he lost a duel to Miyamoto Musashi and later created staff techniques to deal with the sword.

In 1956, jodo joined the All Japan Kendo Federation, and a standard set of forms was created in 1968. There's no free sparring. In tournaments, pairs perform set forms, and judges look at posture, timing, distance, and etiquette. I find it interesting that such a plain stick can stand up to a sword.

Questions people actually ask

And how to answer them.

Q

Do jodo players fight each other freely, like in kendo?

No. There's no free sparring. In competitions, pairs perform set forms one after another, and judges decide which pair did better.

Q

Why would anyone fight a sword with a stick?

A staff is longer than a sword, and you can use either end to strike, sweep, or block. Because it has no blade, the idea is to control the attacker rather than to cut them.

Q

Is jodo practiced outside Japan?

Yes. There are jodo clubs in several countries, especially in Europe, and they often belong to the same federations as kendo.
