Enryakuji is not one building but a large temple complex spread across Mount Hiei, the mountain northeast of Kyoto. The monk Saicho is said to have built a small hall here in 788. After studying in China, he started the Tendai school of Buddhism, and Mount Hiei became one of the most important places to study Buddhism in Japan.
Honen, Shinran, Dogen and Nichiren all trained here before starting their own schools, so it is sometimes called the mother mountain of Japanese Buddhism. The temple also grew powerful, with large lands and armed monks, and in 1571 the warlord Oda Nobunaga burned it down. The buildings you see today were rebuilt later.
In the main hall, a lamp called the Eternal Flame of the Dharma is said to have been passed down for about 1,200 years. In 1994, Enryakuji became part of the Historic Monuments of Ancient Kyoto World Heritage Site. Walking among the tall cedar trees, I can feel how quiet the mountain is.
Questions people actually ask
And how to answer them.
Why did Nobunaga burn the temple?
Enryakuji had large lands and its own armed monks, and it sided with Nobunaga's enemies. He saw it as a military threat. Historians still disagree about how many people died, so the numbers you hear vary.
Is it in Kyoto or in Shiga?
The temple's address is in Otsu, Shiga Prefecture, but Mount Hiei sits on the border, and you can go up from either side. It is included in the World Heritage Site for ancient Kyoto together with sites in Kyoto and Uji.
What is the thousand-day walk I've heard about?
It's called sennichi kaihogyo, one of the hardest forms of training in Japanese Buddhism. Over seven years, a monk walks the mountain paths for a total of 1,000 days, covering nearly 40,000 kilometers. Very few monks have completed it.
