The shortest answer that works

An award announced every December for the words that defined the year in Japan, running since 1984.

その年の日本を映した言葉を選ぶ賞で、1984年から毎年12月に発表されています。

弐

In 30 seconds

The standard explanation

A publisher has picked the words of the year every December since 1984. Candidates are drawn from its own yearbook of current terms — about thirty of them — and a panel chooses a top ten and one or more grand prize winners. It is not a measurement of how often a word was actually said. Some winners enter the language permanently; many are gone within a few years.

1984年から毎年12月、ある出版社がその年の言葉を選んでいます。候補はその社が出す現代用語の年鑑から三十語ほど挙げられ、選考委員がトップテンと年間大賞を決めます。実際にどれだけ使われたかを測ったものではありません。そのまま日本語に残る語もあれば、数年で消える語も多くあります。

Every December, Japan announces its words of the year, and the award is more interesting than the words. A publisher has run it since 1984. Candidates come from its own yearbook of current terms — around thirty are nominated — and a panel picks a top ten and one or more grand prizes.

So it is not a count of what people actually said; it is a small group's reading of the year, which is why Japanese people often react to the list by saying they have never heard half of it. What makes it worth explaining is the sorting that happens afterwards. The very first year, in 1984, one of the winners was the imported phrase sexual harassment, which stayed and changed how workplaces are run.

In 2017 the winner sontaku, guessing what your superior wants without being told, entered the political vocabulary and is still used. But 2013 gave four grand prizes at once, and while omotenashi went around the world, another of them was a catchphrase from a morning drama that almost nobody says today.

Questions people actually ask

And how to answer them.

QWho decides it?

A publisher runs it, drawing candidates from its own yearbook of current terms, and a small selection panel decides the winners. It is not a public vote or a usage survey.

出版社が主催し、自社の現代用語の年鑑から候補を挙げ、少人数の選考委員が決めます。一般投票でも、使用頻度の調査でもありません。

QWhy do Japanese people complain about the list?

Because a word can be chosen that many people have never heard. Since it reflects a panel's judgment rather than measured usage, the gap shows up every year.

聞いたこともない語が選ばれることがあるからです。測った使用量ではなく選考委員の判断を映すものなので、そのずれが毎年出てきます。

QDo any of the words last?

Some do. Sexual harassment from 1984 and sontaku from 2017 are now ordinary Japanese. Catchphrases from a hit drama usually are not, and that is the honest pattern.

あります。1984年の「セクシャル・ハラスメント」や2017年の「忖度」は、いまではふつうの日本語です。当たったドラマの決め台詞は、たいてい残りません。それが正直なところです。

A common misunderstanding

MYTHThe winners are the words Japanese people used most that year.

FACTCandidates come from one publisher's yearbook and a small panel decides. It reflects a reading of the year, not a count of actual usage.
