Every year on July 7th, Japan celebrates “Tanabata.” It’s a special day with a romantic legend where Orihime (the Weaver Girl) and Hikoboshi (the Cowherd) cross the Milky Way to reunite just once a year.
In English, it’s often called the “Star Festival,” but it’s actually known overseas by the word “Tanabata” itself. Tanabata originally came from a Chinese event called “Qiqiaojie” that was introduced to Japan during the Nara period, where it became associated with the star legend of Orihime (Vega) and Hikoboshi (Altair).
English has the expression “star-crossed lovers,” which originates from Shakespeare’s “Romeo and Juliet” and refers to tragic love thwarted by fate. The Tanabata legend’s Orihime and Hikoboshi are also lovers separated by stellar destiny.
