Shigeo Nagashima: The Legend of Japanese Baseball
Shigeo Nagashima, known as “Mr. Baseball,” passed away on June 3, 2025, at a hospital in Tokyo. He was 89 years old. He was one of the most famous baseball players in Japan. Nagashima was born in 1936 in Chiba Prefecture. He played baseball in university and was a star in the Tokyo Big6 Baseball League.
In 1958, Nagashima joined the Yomiuri Giants, a famous Japanese baseball team. In his first game, he struck out four times, but he soon became a top player. He hit many home runs and was loved by fans for his exciting play. He won many awards, such as Rookie of the Year, batting champion, and MVP.
