The Strange Visitor

A woman was sitting at her reel one night; And still she sat, and still she reeled, and still she wished for company.ある晩、女の人が糸まき車の前にすわっていました。じっとすわって、くるくる糸をまいて、だれか来てくれないかなあと思っていました。

In came a pair of broad broad soles, and sat down at the fireside;そこへ、ひろい、ひろい足のうらが二つ入ってきて、だんろのそばにすわりました。

And still she sat, and still she reeled, and still she wished for company.それでも女の人は、じっとすわって、くるくる糸をまいて、だれか来てくれないかなあと思っていました。

In came a pair of small small legs, and sat down on the broad broad soles;そこへ、ちいさな、ちいさな足が二本入ってきて、ひろい、ひろい足のうらの上にすわりました。

And still she sat, and still she reeled, and still she wished for company.それでも女の人は、じっとすわって、くるくる糸をまいて、だれか来てくれないかなあと思っていました。

In came a pair of thick thick knees, and sat down on the small small legs;そこへ、ふとい、ふといひざが二つ入ってきて、ちいさな、ちいさな足の上にすわりました。

And still she sat, and still she reeled, and still she wished for company.それでも女の人は、じっとすわって、くるくる糸をまいて、だれか来てくれないかなあと思っていました。

In came a pair of thin thin thighs, and sat down on the thick thick knees;そこへ、ほそい、ほそいふとももが二本入ってきて、ふとい、ふといひざの上にすわりました。

And still she sat, and still she reeled, and still she wished for company.それでも女の人は、じっとすわって、くるくる糸をまいて、だれか来てくれないかなあと思っていました。

In came a pair of huge huge hips, and sat down on the thin thin thighs;そこへ、でっかい、でっかいこしが入ってきて、ほそい、ほそいふとももの上にすわりました。

And still she sat, and still she reeled, and still she wished for company.それでも女の人は、じっとすわって、くるくる糸をまいて、だれか来てくれないかなあと思っていました。

In came a wee wee waist, and sat down on the huge huge hips;そこへ、ちっちゃな、ちっちゃなウエストが入ってきて、でっかい、でっかいこしの上にすわりました。

And still she sat, and still she reeled, and still she wished for company.それでも女の人は、じっとすわって、くるくる糸をまいて、だれか来てくれないかなあと思っていました。

In came a pair of broad broad shoulders, and sat down on the wee wee waist;そこへ、ひろい、ひろいかたが入ってきて、ちっちゃな、ちっちゃなウエストの上にすわりました。

And still she sat, and still she reeled, and still she wished for company.それでも女の人は、じっとすわって、くるくる糸をまいて、だれか来てくれないかなあと思っていました。

In came a pair of small small arms, and sat down on the broad broad shoulders;そこへ、ちいさな、ちいさなうでが二本入ってきて、ひろい、ひろいかたの上にすわりました。

And still she sat, and still she reeled, and still she wished for company.それでも女の人は、じっとすわって、くるくる糸をまいて、だれか来てくれないかなあと思っていました。

In came a huge huge head, and sat down on the small small neck.そこへ、でっかい、でっかい頭が入ってきて、ちいさな、ちいさな首の上にすわりました。

“How did you get such broad broad feet?” quoth the woman.「どうしてそんなに、ひろい、ひろい足になったの？」と女の人は言いました。

“Much tramping, much tramping” (gruffly).「たくさん歩いた、たくさん歩いた」（がらがら声で）。

“How did you get such small small legs?”「どうしてそんなに、ちいさな、ちいさな足になったの？」

“Aih-h-h!-late—and wee-e-e—moul” (whiningly).「アーーー！　夜おそく――ちょっぴりの――ごはん」（なき声で）。

“How did you get such thick thick knees?”「どうしてそんなに、ふとい、ふといひざになったの？」

“Much praying, much praying” (piously).「たくさんおいのりした、たくさんおいのりした」（しんみょうに）。

“How did you get such thin thin thighs?”「どうしてそんなに、ほそい、ほそいふとももになったの？」

“Aih-h-h!—late—and wee-e-e—moul” (whiningly).「アーーー！　夜おそく――ちょっぴりの――ごはん」（なき声で）。

“How did you get such big big hips?”「どうしてそんなに、おおきな、おおきなこしになったの？」

“Much sitting, much sitting” (gruffly).「たくさんすわった、たくさんすわった」（がらがら声で）。

“How did you get such a wee wee waist?”「どうしてそんなに、ちっちゃな、ちっちゃなウエストになったの？」

“Aih-h-h!—late—and wee-e-e-moul” (whiningly).「アーーー！　夜おそく――ちょっぴりの――ごはん」（なき声で）。

“How did you get such broad broad shoulders?”「どうしてそんなに、ひろい、ひろいかたになったの？」

“With carrying broom, with carrying broom” (gruffly).「ほうきをかついだ、ほうきをかついだ」（がらがら声で）。

“How did you get such small small arms?”「どうしてそんなに、ちいさな、ちいさなうでになったの？」

“Aih-h-h!—late—and wee-e-e—moul” (whiningly.)「アーーー！　夜おそく――ちょっぴりの――ごはん」（なき声で）。

“How did you get such huge huge hands?”「どうしてそんなに、でっかい、でっかい手になったの？」

“Threshing with an iron flail, threshing with an iron flail” (gruffly).「鉄のからざおで麦をうった、鉄のからざおで麦をうった」（がらがら声で）。

“How did you get such a small small neck?”「どうしてそんなに、ちいさな、ちいさな首になったの？」

“Aih-h-h!—late—wee-e-e—moul” (pitifully).「アーーー！　夜おそく――ちょっぴりの――ごはん」（あわれっぽく）。

“How did you get such a huge huge head?”「どうしてそんなに、でっかい、でっかい頭になったの？」

“Much knowledge, much knowledge” (keenly).「たくさんのちえ、たくさんのちえ」（するどく）。

“What do you come for?”「何をしに来たの？」

“FOR YOU!”「おまえを　つかまえにだ！」 (At the top of the voice, with a wave of the arm and a stamp of the feet.)（ここでいちばん大きな声を出し、うでをふりあげて、足をドンとふみならします。）
