Jupiter and the Monkey

There was once a baby show among the Animals in the forest.むかし、森の動物たちのあいだで、赤ちゃんコンテストがひらかれました。 Jupiter provided the prize.ほうびは、神さまのジュピターが用意してくれました。 Of course all the proud mammas from far and near brought their babies.もちろん、あちこちから、じまんのお母さんたちが赤ちゃんをつれてやってきました。 But none got there earlier than Mother Monkey.でも、お母さんザルより早く来た者はいませんでした。 Proudly she presented her baby among the other contestants.お母さんザルは、ほかの赤ちゃんたちにまじって、とくいそうに自分の赤ちゃんを見せました。

As you can imagine, there was quite a laugh when the Animals saw the ugly flat-nosed, hairless, pop-eyed little creature.思ったとおり、動物たちは、鼻がぺちゃんこで、毛がなくて、目がとび出した、ぶかっこうな小さな赤ちゃんを見て、どっと笑いました。

"Laugh if you will," said the Mother Monkey.「笑いたければ笑いなさい」とお母さんザルは言いました。 "Though Jupiter may not give him the prize, I know that he is the prettiest, the sweetest, the dearest darling in the world."「ジュピターさまがこの子にほうびをくださらなくても、この子が世界でいちばんかわいらしくて、いとしくて、だいじな子だって、わたしにはわかっているんですから。」

Mother love is blind.お母さんは、自分の子どものよくないところには、なかなか気づかないものです。
