The Cock and the Fox

One bright evening as the sun was sinking on a glorious world a wise old Cock flew into a tree to roost.ある晴れた夕方、すばらしい世界にお日さまがしずんでいくころ、かしこい年よりのおんどりが、ねむるために木にとびあがりました。 Before he composed himself to rest, he flapped his wings three times and crowed loudly.休む前に、おんどりはつばさを3回バタバタさせて、大きな声で鳴きました。 But just as he was about to put his head under his wing, his beady eyes caught a flash of red and a glimpse of a long pointed nose, and there just below him stood Master Fox.ところが、つばさの下に頭を入れようとしたちょうどそのとき、おんどりの小さな丸い目に、ちらりと赤いものと、長くとがった鼻が見えました。すぐ下に、キツネさんが立っていたのです。

"Have you heard the wonderful news?" cried the Fox in a very joyful and excited manner.「すばらしいニュースを聞いたかい？」とキツネは、とてもうれしそうに、わくわくしたようすでさけびました。

"What news?" asked the Cock very calmly.「どんなニュースだい？」とおんどりは、とてもおちついてたずねました。 But he had a queer, fluttery feeling inside him, for, you know, he was very much afraid of the Fox.でも、おんどりは心の中が、なんだかへんにそわそわしていました。だって、ごぞんじのとおり、おんどりはキツネがとてもこわかったのです。

"Your family and mine and all other animals have agreed to forget their differences and live in peace and friendship from now on forever.「きみの家族もぼくの家族も、ほかの動物たちもみんな、これまでのあらそいをわすれて、これからはずっとなかよく、へいわにくらすことにきまったんだよ。 Just think of it!考えてもごらんよ！ I simply cannot wait to embrace you!きみをだきしめたくて、もうまちきれないよ！ Do come down, dear friend, and let us celebrate the joyful event."さあ、おりておいでよ、友よ。このうれしいできごとを、いっしょにおいわいしよう。」

"How grand!" said the Cock.「なんてすばらしい！」とおんどりは言いました。 "I certainly am delighted at the news."「そのニュースは、ほんとうにうれしいなあ。」 But he spoke in an absent way, and stretching up on tiptoes, seemed to be looking at something afar off.けれど、おんどりはうわのそらで話しながら、つま先立ちになって、何か遠くのものを見ているようでした。

"What is it you see?" asked the Fox a little anxiously.「何が見えるんだい？」とキツネは少ししんぱいそうにたずねました。

"Why, it looks to me like a couple of Dogs coming this way.「おや、犬が2ひき、こっちへやってくるみたいだよ。 They must have heard the good news and—"きっと、いいニュースを聞いたんだね。それで――」

But the Fox did not wait to hear more.けれど、キツネはそのつづきを聞こうとはしませんでした。 Off he started on a run.キツネは走って、にげだしました。

"Wait," cried the Cock.「まって」とおんどりはさけびました。 "Why do you run?「どうしてにげるんだい？ The Dogs are friends of yours now!"犬たちは、もうきみの友だちなんだろう！」

"Yes," answered the Fox.「そうだよ」とキツネは答えました。 "But they might not have heard the news.「でも、犬たちはまだニュースを聞いていないかもしれないからね。 Besides, I have a very important errand that I had almost forgotten about."それに、すっかりわすれていた、とてもだいじな用事があるんだ。」

The Cock smiled as he buried his head in his feathers and went to sleep, for he had succeeded in outwitting a very crafty enemy.おんどりはにっこりわらって、羽の中に頭をうずめてねむりました。とてもずるがしこいてきを、うまく出しぬいたのです。
