Science by the Public
Citizen science refers to research in which members of the public help collect or analyze data. The practice is not new; amateur astronomers and naturalists have made important contributions for centuries, and some bird counts organized by volunteers have continued for more than a hundred years. However, smartphones and the internet have dramatically expanded its reach. Today, volunteers photograph plants and insects, report sightings of wildlife, measure local air quality, and classify images from space telescopes, often sharing their observations through apps that automatically record the time and location.
Such projects allow researchers to study patterns across huge areas and long periods, which would be impossible with professional staff alone. Observations submitted by volunteers have helped scientists track how the ranges of species shift as the climate warms, for example. Participants also benefit, gaining opportunities to learn about science and connect with nature. Nonetheless, concerns about data quality persist. Volunteers may misidentify species, record observations inconsistently, or report mainly from easily accessible places such as parks and roadsides, which can distort the overall picture.
To address these problems, many projects use automated checks, expert review, and training materials, and statisticians have developed methods to correct for uneven sampling. Some studies have found that when such measures are in place, data from volunteers can be nearly as accurate as data collected by professionals. Advocates also argue that citizen science has value beyond the data itself. By involving the public directly in research, it may help build trust in science and encourage communities to take an active role in protecting their local environment.
M Hi, Sarah. What are you doing with your phone out here in the park?
W I'm taking photos of butterflies for a citizen science project. The researchers are tracking how climate change affects where they live.
M Do you need to be an expert to join?
W Not at all. You just upload photos with the location, and an app suggests the species. Specialists check the identifications later.
M That sounds fun. My kids love insects. Could they participate?
W Sure. Children under thirteen need a parent to create the account, but there's a family section with guides and quizzes.
M Great. I'll set one up tonight.
Do you think ordinary people can make a meaningful contribution to scientific research?
Yes, I do. First, volunteers can collect data across wide areas, such as bird sightings throughout the country, which scientists could never do alone. Second, taking part in research helps people understand science better, so they are more likely to support scientific policies on issues like climate change.
