Games for Learning

Video games are often criticized for taking time away from studying and for keeping children indoors. Many parents set strict limits on how long their children can play. However, some educators believe that games, if used well, can actually help children learn. In fact, a growing number of schools around the world are now bringing games into the classroom as learning tools, and some game companies have produced special versions of their products for education.

For example, in some schools, students use a popular building game called Minecraft to design cities together. While doing this, they learn about planning and cooperation, and even mathematics, because they need to calculate the size of buildings. Games also give players instant feedback, so they can quickly see their mistakes and try again. Teachers say this encourages children to keep trying instead of giving up when a problem is difficult.

Nevertheless, experts warn that not all games are educational. Some games are designed to make players spend as much time and money as possible, and children may find it hard to stop playing. In 2019, the World Health Organization officially recognized gaming disorder as a health condition. Experts therefore say that parents and teachers should choose games carefully and make sure that children also spend time on physical activities and face-to-face communication.
