Saving Animals with Drones

Protecting wild animals in large areas such as forests and grasslands is difficult. Rangers cannot walk everywhere, and some places are too dangerous to enter. In addition, illegal hunters often work at night, when they are hard to see. For many years, conservation groups relied on small airplanes to watch over wide areas, but these were very expensive to operate and could not fly close to the ground.

To solve these problems, conservation groups in Africa and Asia have started using drones. These small flying machines carry special cameras that can detect animals from the sky, even in the dark, by sensing their body heat. As a result, rangers can count animals more accurately than before. In some national parks, drones have also helped rangers find illegal hunters before they could harm elephants and rhinos. Drones are useful for checking areas after forest fires and floods, too.

However, drones are not a perfect solution. Good drones are still expensive, and they require trained operators who can fly them safely. Their batteries also last only a short time, so they cannot stay in the air for long. Moreover, some researchers are concerned that the noise of drones may frighten animals and cause them to run away. They are now studying how high the machines should fly so that the animals are not disturbed.

(6)What was one problem with using small airplanes?

正解は④。第2段落に cameras that can detect animals from the sky, even in the dark, by sensing their body heat とある。①は音についての記述はない。②は本文に記述がない。③は本文に記述がない。
(8)Why are some researchers studying how high drones should fly?
正解は②。第3段落に the noise of drones may frighten animals ... so that the animals are not disturbed とある。frighten を scare と言い換えている。①は電池が短いことは問題点として挙げられているが、飛ぶ高さを研究する理由ではない。③は操縦者の訓練費用を下げるためという記述はない。④は本文に記述がない。
