目安 4分The Four-Day Workweek
For about a century, most office workers around the world have worked five days a week. In recent years, however, several countries have tested a four-day workweek. In one large trial in the United Kingdom in 2022, about 60 companies allowed their employees to work four days a week without reducing their salaries. The goal was to find out whether workers could do the same amount of work in less time.
The results were encouraging. After six months, most of the companies decided to continue the system. Employees reported feeling less stressed and sleeping better, and fewer workers quit their jobs during the trial. Many companies also said that their sales did not fall. Some managers explained that their employees had become more efficient by holding shorter meetings and avoiding unnecessary tasks.
However, the system does not suit every type of business. For instance, hospitals and stores need staff every day, so they would have to hire more workers to cover the extra day off. This could greatly increase their costs. In addition, some employees found that they had to work harder on the remaining four days, which made them feel more pressure. For these reasons, experts say that each company must carefully consider whether the system fits its situation before introducing it.
