Libraries in the Digital Age

For centuries, libraries have been places where people could borrow books and find information. However, with the spread of the Internet, many people now search online instead of visiting a library. In addition, e-books can be downloaded in seconds. As a result, the number of visitors to some libraries fell, and some local governments began to question whether libraries were still necessary.

To survive, many libraries have changed the way they serve their communities. Besides lending books, they now offer free Wi-Fi, computer classes, and quiet spaces where students can study. Some libraries also lend e-books and hold events such as concerts and cooking classes. In Japan, a library in Takeo, Saga Prefecture, attracted national attention in 2013 when it was redesigned with a café and a bookstore inside. The number of visitors increased sharply in its first year after reopening.

However, not everyone welcomed these changes. Some critics said that libraries with cafés were becoming more like shopping centers than places of learning. Others worried that libraries were spending too much money on popular new books and not enough on materials about local history. Experts say that the key challenge for libraries today is to attract new users while protecting their traditional role of preserving knowledge for future generations.

(6)Why did some local governments question whether libraries were necessary?
(7)What happened to the library in Takeo?
(8)What did some critics worry about?
