目安 4分Why Cities Are Hotter
On summer days, temperatures in city centers are often several degrees higher than in the countryside nearby. This is known as the "heat island" effect. It was first described in the early 1800s by a British scientist who noticed that London was warmer than the surrounding areas. Since then, as cities have grown larger, the effect has become stronger in many parts of the world.
Scientists have identified several causes of heat islands. Buildings and roads made of concrete and asphalt absorb heat from the sun during the day and release it slowly at night. Cities also have fewer trees and less open ground, so there is less water evaporating to cool the air. In addition, heat is produced by cars, factories, and air conditioners. In Tokyo, the average temperature has risen by about three degrees over the past hundred years, which is much more than the global average.
Heat islands can cause serious problems. More people suffer from heatstroke, and the demand for electricity rises as people use their air conditioners more. To fight the problem, some cities are planting more trees and creating "green roofs" covered with plants. Others are using special paint that reflects sunlight on roads and buildings. Studies show that such measures can lower the surface temperature of streets and roofs by several degrees.

M You're right. Let's go next weekend instead. The forecast says it will be sunny then.
