Volunteering Abroad

In recent years, a growing number of young people have been spending their holidays volunteering in other countries. Instead of just sightseeing, they teach English at schools, build houses, or take care of animals. This kind of travel, sometimes called "voluntourism," became popular in the 2000s, and today many companies offer programs that combine volunteer work with travel.

Supporters say that volunteering abroad has benefits for both volunteers and local communities. Volunteers can learn about different cultures, improve their language skills, and develop confidence. Many say the experience changed the way they think about the world, and some later choose careers in international aid. Local communities, in turn, can receive help with projects that they could not complete on their own.

However, critics have pointed out some problems with voluntourism. Many programs last only one or two weeks, which is often not long enough for volunteers to make a real difference. For example, when children at an orphanage become close to volunteers who leave soon afterward, the children may feel hurt again and again. In addition, volunteers without special skills sometimes do jobs that local workers could do. Experts therefore suggest that people who want to volunteer abroad should choose programs carefully and ask how their work will actually help the community.

(6)What is "voluntourism"?
(7)According to supporters, how can volunteers benefit?
(8)What is one problem that critics point out?

Do you think high school students should be required to do volunteer work?

No. I think volunteer work should be done because people want to help others. If students are forced to do it, they may not enjoy it. Schools should give students information about volunteer activities instead.
