Animals That Help People

People have kept animals as companions for thousands of years. In the past, dogs were mainly used for hunting or guarding homes, but today many people treat their pets as members of the family. Over the last few decades, scientists have become interested in how living with animals affects people's health, and a growing number of studies suggest that pets can be good for both the body and the mind.

For example, research has found that stroking a dog or a cat can lower a person's blood pressure and reduce stress. Dog owners also tend to get more exercise because they have to take their pets for walks every day. Because of such benefits, some hospitals and care homes have started "animal therapy" programs. In these programs, trained dogs visit patients regularly, and many patients say they feel calmer and less lonely after spending time with the animals.

However, owning a pet is a big responsibility. Pets need food, medical care, and attention for many years, and some people are not prepared for this. In Japan and other countries, thousands of pets are abandoned every year, often because their owners move or can no longer afford to take care of them. Animal welfare groups therefore advise people to think carefully before bringing a pet into their homes.

(7)What happens in animal therapy programs?

(8)Why are many pets abandoned?
正解は②。第3段落第3文に、飼い主の引っ越しや世話をする経済的余裕がなくなることが理由とある。③は動物愛護団体は飼う前によく考えるよう助言しているだけ。①④は本文にない。
