Selling Food That Would Be Wasted

Every year, around one third of all the food produced in the world is lost or wasted. In rich countries, a large part of this waste comes from supermarkets, restaurants, and homes. Shops often discard food that is still safe to eat simply because it has passed its best-before date or does not look perfect. At the same time, millions of people around the world do not have enough to eat.

In recent years, several new services have been developed to reduce this waste. One example is a smartphone app that was started in Denmark in 2016. Through the app, bakeries, cafés, and supermarkets can sell leftover food at the end of the day at a low price. Users choose a shop, pay through the app, and then pick up a "surprise bag" of food. The service has spread to many countries, and the company says it has saved hundreds of millions of meals from being thrown away.

Such services have been popular with both shops and customers. Shops can earn money from food that they would otherwise have to pay to get rid of, and customers can buy meals cheaply. However, some experts point out that apps alone cannot solve the problem. They say that most food waste actually happens at home, so people also need to change their own habits, such as buying only what they need.

(6)Why do shops often throw away food?
②は still safe to eat と矛盾。
(7)How does the app from Denmark work?
(8)What do some experts say about food waste?

Yes. I think it is a good way to reduce food waste. A lot of food is thrown away at restaurants every day. If customers can take it home, they can eat it later and save money, too.
