目安 4分Too Many Tourists
In the past, many cities and towns tried hard to attract more tourists because visitors brought money to local shops, hotels, and restaurants. Thanks to cheaper flights and the popularity of social media, the number of international travelers increased rapidly in the 2010s. Places that appeared in popular photos online suddenly became famous destinations, and some of them received far more visitors than they could handle.
This situation, often called "overtourism," has caused many problems. In Venice, Italy, huge numbers of tourists fill the narrow streets every day, and many residents have moved away because rents have become too expensive. In some parts of Kyoto, local people have found it difficult to get on buses because they are crowded with tourists carrying large suitcases. Some residents also complain about noise and litter, and about visitors who take photos of private homes without permission.
To solve these problems, some places have introduced new rules. Venice now charges day visitors an entrance fee on busy days, and Amsterdam has stopped allowing new hotels to be built in the city center. Other places are encouraging tourists to visit during less popular seasons or to go to areas that are less well known. Experts say that the goal is not to stop tourism but to make sure that it benefits both visitors and the people who live there.
