Until recently, most office workers commuted to their companies every day. Working from home was possible for some people, such as writers and designers, but many managers believed that employees would not work hard if no one was watching them. In 2020, however, the spread of COVID-19 forced a large number of companies to let their workers do their jobs from home almost overnight.
Many companies were surprised by the results. Some studies found that remote workers were just as productive as those in the office, and in some cases even more efficient. Employees saved the time and money they had spent on commuting, and many said they had more time for their families and hobbies. Companies also found that they could reduce costs by renting smaller offices. As a result, many firms decided to continue allowing remote work even after the pandemic ended.
However, remote work has its disadvantages. Some workers say they feel lonely because they rarely see their colleagues. Others find it hard to separate their work from their private life, and they end up working longer hours than before. Managers also worry that new employees may not learn as much when they cannot watch experienced workers. For these reasons, many companies now use a "hybrid" system, in which employees work at the office on some days and at home on others.
