今のこっている中でいちばん古い「遊びの折り紙」の本は、1797年（江戸時代）に京都で出た『秘傳千羽鶴折形（ひでんせんばづるおりかた）』だと言われています。のっているのは、1まいの紙に切りこみを入れて、何羽もの鶴をつなげて折る「連鶴（れんづる）」です。200年以上も前の人たちも、折り紙で遊んでいたのですね。

The oldest known book of origami for fun is Hiden Senbazuru Orikata. It was published in Kyoto in 1797. It shows how to fold many cranes joined together from one sheet of paper with a few small cuts. People enjoyed origami more than 200 years ago!

『秘傳千羽鶴折形』の連鶴を考えたのは、今の三重県桑名市にあるお寺のお坊さん、義道（ぎどう）さんだと言われています。本の中には、1まいの紙から最高97羽もの鶴がつながる作品がのっています。桑名市は、この本の折り方49種を「桑名の千羽鶴」として、市の無形文化財にしています。

The connected cranes in the 1797 book are said to be the work of Gido, a Buddhist monk from Kuwana in today's Mie Prefecture. One design connects as many as 97 cranes from a single sheet! Kuwana City now protects 49 of these designs as a local cultural treasure.

『日本書紀』という古い歴史の本には、610年に高句麗（こうくり：朝鮮半島にあった国）のお坊さん、曇徴（どんちょう）が紙の作り方を伝えたと書かれています。ただ、それより前から紙は伝わっていたという考えもあります。日本ではその後、うすくて強い「和紙」が生まれ、折り紙の土台になりました。

An old history book, the Nihon Shoki, says that a monk named Doncho came from Korea in 610 and showed how to make paper. Some experts think paper came to Japan even earlier. Later, Japan made thin, strong washi paper, which is great for folding.

中国の蔡倫（さいりん）という役人が、105年ごろ、木の皮やぼろ布、古い魚あみなどから紙を作る方法を皇帝に伝えたと言われています。じつは紙はそれより前からありましたが、蔡倫が作り方をよくして広めたとされています。その技術が朝鮮半島をへて、日本にも伝わりました。

Around the year 105, a Chinese official named Cai Lun is said to have shown the emperor a way to make paper from tree bark, old cloth and fishing nets. Paper actually existed before him, but he improved the method. The skill later spread to Korea and Japan.

さいしょは遊びではありませんでした。昔の日本では紙はとても大切で、おくり物を紙できれいに包む作法が生まれました。室町時代には小笠原家や伊勢家が、こうした礼儀作法をととのえたと言われ、今もお祝いで見る「のし」の包みはその流れをくんでいます。遊びの折り紙が広まったのは、紙がたくさん作られるようになった江戸時代です。

Not at first! Long ago in Japan, paper was precious, and people wrapped gifts in folded paper with special rules. In the Muromachi period, the Ogasawara and Ise families organized these manners. Folding just for fun became popular later, in the Edo period.

1680年に井原西鶴（いはらさいかく）が作った短い句に、紙で折ったチョウが出てきます。これは、日本で紙の折り物がはっきり書かれた、いちばん古い記録の一つだと言われています。結婚式では、オスとメスのチョウ（雄蝶・雌蝶）の折り紙が、花むこと花よめを表していたそうです。

A short poem by the writer Ihara Saikaku from 1680 mentions paper butterflies. It is one of the oldest clear records of folded paper models in Japan. At weddings, a pair of paper butterflies stood for the bride and the groom.

じつは、遊びで折る折り紙ではありません。昔は半分に折った紙を「折紙（おりがみ）」とよび、大事な文書に使っていました。江戸時代には、刀や美術品が本物だと証明する鑑定書もこの形でした。そこから「折り紙付き」は「たしかだと保証されている」という意味になったのです。

It is not paper for folding toys! Long ago, a sheet folded in half was called origami and was used for official papers. In the Edo period, certificates that proved a sword or artwork was real used this form. So origami-tsuki came to mean something is guaranteed to be good.

「鶴は千年、亀は万年」ということわざがあります。鶴は千年、亀は一万年生きるという中国の古い言い伝えから来ていて、長生きでめでたいことのたとえです。本物の鶴がそんなに長生きするわけではありませんが、折り鶴にも「長生きしてね」「元気になってね」という願いがこめられてきました。

There is a Japanese saying: cranes live a thousand years, and turtles live ten thousand. It comes from an old Chinese legend and means a long, happy life. Real cranes don't live that long, but paper cranes carry wishes for good health and long life.

佐々木禎子（ささきさだこ）さんは2さいのとき広島で原爆にあい、12さいのときに白血病と分かりました。病気が治ると信じて入院中も鶴を折り続けましたが、1955年に亡くなりました。同級生たちのよびかけと全国からの募金で、1958年5月5日に「原爆の子の像」が完成し、今も毎年およそ1000万羽の折り鶴がささげられています。

Sadako Sasaki was two years old when the atomic bomb hit Hiroshima. Years later she became sick with leukemia, and she kept folding paper cranes, hoping to get well. After she died in 1955, her classmates and children all over Japan raised money for the Children's Peace Monument, finished in 1958. About ten million paper cranes are offered there every year.

日本折紙協会が1980年に決めました。「1」を正方形の1つの辺に見立てると、1が4つ並ぶ11月11日は、折り紙の4つの辺になるからです。また、この日は第一次世界大戦が終わった日（1918年）でもあり、平和を願う折り紙の心と重なることも理由の一つです。

パハリータはスペイン語で「小鳥」という意味で、スペインで昔から親しまれてきた紙の鳥です。有名な作家ミゲル・デ・ウナムーノも子どものころからパハリータが大好きで、自分でも新しい作品を考えました。スペイン語では、折り紙のことを「パピロフレクシア（papiroflexia）」ともよびます。

Pajarita means little bird in Spanish. It is a traditional paper bird loved in Spain for a long time. The famous writer Miguel de Unamuno folded pajaritas as a child and even created new models. In Spanish, paper folding is also called papiroflexia.

幼稚園（キンダーガルテン）を始めたドイツのフリードリヒ・フレーベルは、1800年代に、紙を折る遊びを子どもの教育に取り入れました。指を上手に使う力や、形を考える力が育つと考えたのです。この考え方は明治時代の日本の幼稚園にも伝わり、日本の昔からの折り紙といっしょに広まりました。

Friedrich Fröbel, the German teacher who started kindergartens, used paper folding in his lessons in the 1800s. He believed it helped children use their fingers and understand shapes. His ideas came to Japanese kindergartens in the Meiji period and mixed with Japan's own folding.

吉澤章（よしざわあきら、1911〜2005年）さんです。今にも動き出しそうな生き物の作品をたくさん作り、紙を少ししめらせて丸みのある形に折る「ウェットフォールディング（しめり折り）」を広めました。1983年には勲章（勲五等双光旭日章）を受けています。

Akira Yoshizawa (1911–2005) is often called the father of modern origami. He folded animals that look almost alive. He also made wet-folding popular: you dampen the paper a little to make soft, round shapes. In 1983, he received the Order of the Rising Sun.

「点線は谷折り」のような折り図の記号のもとは、吉澤章さんが1954年の本で発表したものです。それをアメリカのサミュエル・ランドレットさんやイギリスのロバート・ハービンさんが、いくつか記号を足して広めました。そのため「吉澤・ランドレット方式」とよばれ、今では世界中で使われています。言葉が分からなくても、記号で折り方が伝わるのです。

The basic symbols in folding diagrams, like a dashed line for a valley fold, come from a system Akira Yoshizawa showed in a 1954 book. Samuel Randlett and Robert Harbin added a few symbols and spread it. It is called the Yoshizawa–Randlett system, and people everywhere can read diagrams without knowing the language.

Yes! On March 14, 2012, Google turned its logo into origami to celebrate what would have been Akira Yoshizawa's 101st birthday. The letters were folded by the American origami artist Robert J. Lang. Yoshizawa's famous butterflies decorated the logo too.

数学の先生で折り紙作家でもあった川崎敏和（かわさきとしかず）さんが考えた、立体のバラの折り紙です。1まいの正方形の紙から、花びらがくるりと重なったバラができあがり、世界中で折られています。川崎さんは折り紙の数学の研究でも有名で、「川崎定理」にも名前が残っています。

The Kawasaki Rose is a 3D paper rose designed by Toshikazu Kawasaki, a math teacher and origami designer. From one square, you get a rose with petals that twist around the center. Kawasaki was also a famous origami mathematician, and a theorem is named after him.

In origami, folding is the main star. Cutting, gluing and coloring are only extras. Some folders even follow a rule: use just one square sheet and never cut it. The classic paper crane follows this rule too!

宇宙の構造物を研究していた三浦公亮（みうらこうりょう）さんが考えた折り方です。折り目が少しななめの平行四辺形になっていて、はしを引っぱるだけで全体がさっと開き、押せばまたたためます。1995年に打ち上げられた人工衛星「SFU（宇宙実験・観測フリーフライヤ）」では、この折り方の太陽電池パネルを宇宙で広げる実験が行われました。

The Miura fold was invented by the Japanese space scientist Koryo Miura. Its folds make slanted parallelograms, so you can open the whole sheet just by pulling the ends and close it by pushing. In 1995, the Japanese satellite Space Flyer Unit tested a solar panel folded this way in space.

この望遠鏡には、テニスコートほどの大きさ（約21m×14m）の、5まい重ねの日よけがついています。そのままではロケットに入らないので、ていねいに折りたたんで打ち上げられました。宇宙に出たあと、2021年12月28日から少しずつ広げはじめ、2022年1月4日に広げ終わりました。

The James Webb Space Telescope has a five-layer sunshield about the size of a tennis court. It was too big for the rocket, so engineers folded it up carefully, a bit like origami. In space, it slowly unfolded, and the work finished on January 4, 2022.

In a 2006 paper, they used a thin sheet of special shape-memory metal that can open at body temperature. It can go into the body small and then open up inside.

To test an airbag on a computer, engineers first need a model of the folded airbag. A method Robert J. Lang made for designing origami insects turned out to fit this flattening problem perfectly. A German company added it to its airbag simulation software.

In 2006, Paul Rothemund at Caltech showed a way to fold DNA into almost any shape. One long DNA strand is held in place by many short staple strands. His smiley faces were only about 100 nanometers wide, about one-thousandth of the width of a hair!

「点を点に重ねる」「線を線に重ねる」など、1回で折れる基本の折り方は7種類にまとめられ、「藤田・羽鳥の公理」とよばれます。6つは藤田文章（ふじたふみあき）さんが示し、7つ目は羽鳥公士郎（はとりこうしろう）さんが2002年に発表しました（じつは、フランスのジャック・ジュスタンさんがもっと前に見つけていました）。ロバート・ラングさんは、これで全部そろっていることを示しました。

There are seven basic ways to make a single fold, such as putting one point onto another or one line onto another. They are called the Huzita–Hatori axioms. どんな角でも、ぴったり3等分することです。コンパスと目もりのない定規だけでは、ふつうの角を3等分するのは不可能だと数学で証明されています。でも折り紙なら、阿部恒（あべひさし）さんの方法（1980年に紹介）で3等分できます。折り紙は3次方程式も解けるので、ある意味でコンパスと定規より「強い」道具なのです。

Dividing any angle into three equal parts! Math has proved this is impossible with only a compass and a ruler with no marks. But with origami, you can do it using Hisashi Abe's method, reported in 1980. Origami can even solve cubic equations, so in a way it is more powerful than a compass and ruler.

なんと、まっすぐな線でできた形なら、どんな形でも作れることが証明されています！エリック・ドメインさんたちが1990年代の終わりに示した「折って1回切る定理」です。1721年の日本の本『和国智恵較（わこくちえくらべ）』にも、折って1回切るだけで紋の形を作る問題がのっています。

Any shape made of straight lines! Erik Demaine and his team proved this in the late 1990s. It is called the fold-and-cut theorem. A Japanese puzzle book from 1721, Wakoku Chiyekurabe, already asked readers to make a crest shape with one straight cut.

In math, yes! Paper 0.1 mm thick doubles in thickness with each fold. After 42 folds, it is 0.1 mm × 2 to the 42nd power, or about 440,000 km. The Moon is about 384,000 km away on average, so it would get there. (41 folds gives only about 220,000 km.) Of course, real paper cannot be folded that many times.

Twelve times! On January 27, 2002, American high school student Britney Gallivan folded a very long, thin sheet of paper, about 1.2 km long, in half 12 times. After 12 folds, the paper has 4,096 layers. She also worked out a math formula for how long the paper needs to be.

ギネス世界記録では、つばさの幅が81.94mの折り鶴が世界一です。2009年8月29日、広島修道大学で「ピースピースプロジェクト」の800人が力を合わせて折りました。学校の25mプールを3つ並べたよりも長いのです！

According to Guinness World Records, the largest paper crane had a wingspan of 81.94 meters. It was folded by 800 people from the Peace Piece Project at Hiroshima Shudo University on August 29, 2009. That's longer than three 25-meter swimming pools in a row!

ギネス世界記録によると、2022年7月31日に香港で、233万1631羽もの折り鶴をかざった記録があります。1秒に1羽ずつ折っても、休まずに約27日かかる数です！

Guinness World Records says 2,331,631 paper cranes were displayed in Hong Kong on July 31, 2022. If you folded one crane every second without stopping, it would take about 27 days!

According to Guinness World Records, the farthest paper plane flight is 98.43 meters. Liu Liwen and a team from China set it in Shanghai on December 28, 2025. The record before that was 88.31 meters by a team from the USA in 2022. (Record as of October 2026.)

山折りは mountain fold（マウンテン・フォールド）、谷折りは valley fold（バレー・フォールド）です。英語でも日本語と同じように、山のようにとがるか、谷のようにへこむかで名前がついています。折り図では、谷折りは点線、山折りは点と線をくり返す線で表すのが世界共通です。

Yama-ori is a mountain fold, and tani-ori is a valley fold. Just like in Japanese, the names come from the shape: a mountain points up, and a valley goes down. In diagrams, a dashed line means a valley fold, and a dash-and-dot line means a mountain fold.
