サモトラケのニケは、ギリシャ神話の勝利の女神ニケの大理石像です。紀元前190年ごろ、エーゲ海のサモトラケ島にある「偉大なる神々の聖域」に建てられたと考えられています。女神は船の先に降り立ち、大きな翼を広げています。今はルーヴル美術館の大階段の上に立ち、訪れる人を見下ろしています。

The Winged Victory of Samothrace is a marble statue of Nike, the Greek goddess of victory. It was probably set up around 190 BC in the Sanctuary of the Great Gods on the island of Samothrace. The goddess lands on the front of a ship with her wings open. Today she stands at the top of a great staircase in the Louvre.

1863年、フランスの外交官シャルル・シャンポワゾーが島で像のかけらを見つけ、パリへ送りました。像はたくさんのかけらに割れていて、組み立てるのに長い時間がかかりました。海風に吹かれて体にはりつく薄い衣の表現は、ヘレニズム時代の彫刻の最高傑作の一つとされます。

In 1863, a French diplomat named Charles Champoiseau found pieces of the statue and sent them to Paris. Putting it back together took a long time. Look at the thin dress pressed against her body by the sea wind. It is one of the greatest works of Greek sculpture.

頭と腕の大部分は見つかっていません（右手の一部は発見されています）。それでも、体全体で「前へ進む力」を感じさせます。2013〜2014年には大がかりな修復が行われ、白さがよみがえりました。1909年、イタリアの詩人マリネッティは「未来派宣言」で「うなりを上げて走る自動車は、サモトラケのニケより美しい」と書きました。それほど「美の代表」とされていたのです。

Her head and most of her arms are still missing, although parts of her right hand have been found. Even so, her whole body seems to move forward. A big restoration in 2013–2014 cleaned the marble. In 1909, the Italian poet Marinetti wrote that a roaring racing car was more beautiful than the Victory of Samothrace. She was that famous as a symbol of beauty.
