No arms, yet the most beautiful? A goddess dug up in a Greek field.
The Venus de Milo is a marble statue. It probably shows Aphrodite, the Greek goddess of love and beauty. The Romans called her Venus. It is about two meters tall and was made around 150–125 BC. Today it is one of the most popular works in the Louvre in Paris.
In 1820, a farmer on the Greek island of Milos found the statue in the ground. French navy officers saw how special it was, and France bought it. It was given to King Louis XVIII, who gave it to the Louvre in 1821. Look at her twisting body and the cloth that seems about to slip down.
Because her arms are missing, people imagine what she once looked like. She became a symbol of lost beauty. During World War II, she was hidden in a castle in the French countryside. Artists like Dalí made new works based on her, and she still appears in ads and pictures today.
This is a very old statue of a goddess. She is from Greece. A farmer found her in a field in 1820. She has no arms. Nobody knows where her arms are!
Her arms have not been found in over 200 years. Was she holding an apple? A shield? Many ideas exist. The apple idea is popular, because the island's name sounds like the Greek word for apple.
A base piece with the name 'Alexandros of Antioch' was reportedly found nearby. But it disappeared after reaching the Louvre. Some say it was hidden, because France wanted a more famous sculptor's name.
In 1964, the statue traveled to Japan by ship and was shown in Tokyo and Kyoto. About 1.72 million people are said to have come. It is said to be the only time she has left France.
She looks like one stone, but the upper and lower body are two blocks of marble. The join is hidden near the folds of the cloth around her hips. A clever ancient trick!
