A great battle made of over a million tiny stones! Alexander the Great vs. the King of Persia.
The young commander charging on horseback from the left is Alexander the Great of Macedon. On the right, Darius III, King of Persia, stretches out his hand from his chariot with a frightened face. It has long been said to show the Battle of Issus in 333 BC. It is a mosaic, made of small pieces of stone set into a floor, and it is more than five meters wide.
This mosaic decorated a floor in a large house in Pompeii called the House of the Faun. It was made around 100 BC, but it is thought to copy a famous Greek painting from around 300 BC. The original painting is lost. With stones of only a few colors, the craftsmen still showed shadows, depth and distance.
In AD 79, the eruption of Mount Vesuvius buried Pompeii in ash. This mosaic was dug up in 1831. In November 1844, it was moved to the museum in Naples, and a copy made in 2005 now lies on the floor of the House of the Faun. It has appeared again and again in history books as a picture of an ancient battle.
This is a big picture of a battle. It is made of very small stones. Alexander the Great rides a horse on the left. The King of Persia is on the right. He looks scared and wants to run away.

This mosaic is estimated to have about 1.5 million pieces of stone, and some counts say over 4 million. Each piece is only a few millimeters wide. They were set into the floor one by one.
Near the bottom center, the face of a fallen Persian soldier is reflected in a shiny shield. Showing a reflection with only pieces of stone was a way for the craftsmen to show off their skill.
The largest and most expressive figure is actually Darius, the king who is losing. His driver whips the horses to escape, while the king turns and reaches out. The drama of the loser catches our eye more than the winner.
A well-known theory says the original Greek painting was by Philoxenus of Eretria. Other names, such as Apelles, have also been suggested. There is no proof, so it is still a mystery.
