Not a tourist view! A building site in Venice.
This is Campo San Vidal in Venice, a square by the Grand Canal. Here it has become a stonemason's yard for building work on a church. In the foreground, workers cut and shape big stones, and chips of stone cover the ground. Across the canal stands the church of Santa Maria della Carità with its pointed bell tower. With laundry hanging out and gondolas passing by, it feels like real daily life.
Canaletto became very popular with British travelers for his detailed views of famous places in Venice. But this painting shows an everyday building site, not a famous sight. It is an early work. With its strong light and shadow, and the feel of stone and wood, it is thought to be one of his very best paintings.
The bell tower in the painting fell down in 1744. Later, the church buildings became Venice's art school and the Accademia Gallery. Today the Accademia Bridge crosses the Grand Canal here, so you cannot see this exact view anymore. The painting once belonged to the British collector Sir George Beaumont, and it entered the National Gallery in 1828.
This is a square in Venice. Workers are cutting big stones. Across the water, there is a tall bell tower. That tower fell down in 1744! Look at the lower left. A little child fell down, too.
The bell tower of the Carità church, on the left, fell in 1744 and destroyed the house in front of it. The painting is now a valuable record of a tower that no longer exists. Canaletto saved a view of the city before it changed.
Look at the lower left. A little child has fallen over and, in surprise, is peeing! His mother is rushing to help. Canaletto was famous for grand views, but he also painted funny little moments like this.
In 1852, the National Gallery cleaned several paintings, including this one. Critics said they had been cleaned too much. In 1853, a special committee of the British Parliament looked into how the Gallery cleaned and restored paintings. How to restore great paintings has always caused arguments.
A rooster is crowing on a windowsill at the lower left. A woman spins thread on a balcony on the right, and another draws water from a well near the shed. Every corner of this big picture is full of small stories of Venetian life.
