本名はジョヴァンニ・アントーニオ・カナールで、ヴェネツィアの舞台背景画家の息子として生まれました。運河や広場、お祭りの日のヴェネツィアを、すみずみまで正確に描いた都市の風景画で人気になります。とくに「グランド・ツアー」でイタリアを旅するイギリスの貴族たちが、おみやげとして買い求めました。1746年ごろからは約10年、ロンドンでも活躍しました。
His real name was Giovanni Antonio Canal. He was born in Venice, the son of a painter of theater scenery. He became popular for precise city views of Venice: its canals, squares and festival days. British nobles on the 'Grand Tour' of Italy loved to buy them as souvenirs. From about 1746, he also worked in London for around ten years.
