Thinking with a pen at her lips... a woman from 2,000 years ago, saved from volcanic ash.
A young woman with a golden hairnet holds a pointed pen to her lips. In her other hand, she holds a writing tablet. This round portrait was painted on a wall of a house in the Roman town of Pompeii. It is called 'Sappho', after a famous Greek woman poet, but no one knows who she really was.
She is holding wax tablets: wooden boards covered with wax and tied together. People wrote by scratching the wax with a pointed pen called a stylus. They could erase the words by smoothing the wax with the flat end. In Pompeii, being shown with writing tools probably meant that a person was educated.
In AD 79, the eruption of Mount Vesuvius buried Pompeii under thick ash, and this picture slept for a long time. After digging began in the 18th century, the painting was cut from the wall and taken to the museum in Naples. Her thoughtful face feels very close to us. It has become a famous image of a Roman woman in books and on stamps.

Sappho was a Greek poet who lived around the 7th to 6th centuries BC, more than 600 years before this painting. 'Sappho' is a nickname given later. The woman was probably a real person who lived in Pompeii.
英語の tablet(タブレット)と同じ仲間のことばです。
A wax tablet was called a 'tabula' in Latin, a word related to the English 'tablet'. You could write, erase and write again. People 2,000 years ago also took notes on a board that fit in their hands, just like us.
In another Pompeii painting, the portrait of Terentius Neo and his wife, the wife also holds a stylus to her lips and a wax tablet in her hand. This pose seems to have been a popular style for portraits of women at the time.
The net over her hair is painted gold. Wealthy women at the time are thought to have used nets of gold thread to hold their hair. Gold hoop earrings shine on her ears, too.
