The emperor who gave his name to August! Rome's first emperor, barefoot.
This is a marble statue of Augustus, the first emperor of Rome. It was found in 1863 at the villa of his wife, Livia, at Prima Porta, north of Rome. That is how it got its name. He wears armour and raises his right hand, as if he is speaking to his soldiers. This image is an old black-and-white photo from the 19th century.
The pose is based on a famous Greek statue called the Spear Bearer. The breastplate shows an event from 20 BC. The Parthians gave back Roman army standards they had captured. Augustus got them back without a war, and he was very proud of it.
Augustus lived until he was 75, but his official portraits usually showed him young and ideal. They worked like advertising for the emperor across the empire. His face looked almost the same in every statue, so everyone could recognise him. Today this statue in the Vatican Museums is one of the most famous images of a Roman emperor.
This is Augustus, the first emperor of Rome. He wears armour, but he has no shoes. He raises his hand and talks to his soldiers. The month August got its name from him!
それが英語の August(8月)です。
In the Roman calendar, one month was renamed 'Augustus' after this emperor in 8 BC. That became the English word August. July comes from Julius Caesar, his adoptive father.
Near his right leg is a small Cupid riding a dolphin. Cupid is the son of Venus. Augustus's family claimed they came from Venus. So the Cupid says, 'This emperor has a god in his family.'
He wears armour, but no shoes. In ancient art, bare feet were a sign of gods and heroes. So some experts think the statue was made after Augustus died and was honoured as a god.
It looks white now, but traces of paint were found on it. The cloak was probably red, and the armour reliefs were coloured too. Copies with restored colours have been made. The Latin words on the base were added in the 19th century under Pope Pius IX.
