By a window overlooking the Kamo River in Kyoto, a maiko in a colorful kimono sits with her arm on the railing. She turns toward a young girl on the right. Outside, the river sparkles. The painter was Kuroda Seiki, who greatly changed Western-style painting in Japan. This oil painting from 1893 is an Important Cultural Property, owned by the Tokyo National Museum.
Kuroda spent about nine years in France, about seven of them studying painting, and came home in 1893. That autumn, he visited Kyoto for the first time and painted this picture. The maiko sits with bright window light behind her, so her face is in soft shadow. The reds and blues of the kimono and the light on the water are painted with quick strokes. Here he tried the 'colors of outdoor light' he learned in France on a Japanese scene.
The way the maiko and the young girl face each other is also praised, and this is one of Kuroda's major works from just after he returned. Kuroda later taught at the Tokyo School of Fine Arts and trained many painters. His works are shown at the Kuroda Memorial Hall in Ueno. It is seen as one of the first works in which Kuroda's French training bore fruit in Japan.

The bright Kamo River is behind the maiko, so her face is in soft shadow. Kuroda used the direction and brightness of the backlight in his picture. You can see what he learned about outdoor light in France here.
Kuroda was born in Kagoshima and grew up in Tokyo. He first visited Kyoto in 1893, the year he returned from France. After so many years abroad, the city and the maiko may have looked fresh and dazzling to him.
Kuroda inherited the title of viscount from his uncle and adoptive father, Kuroda Kiyotsuna. He was both a painter and a noble, and he later became a member of the House of Peers. He was a rare painter who took part in national politics, too.
When Kuroda died in 1924, he left a will asking that his money be used to support art. The Kuroda Memorial Hall in Ueno was built from this wish. People can still see his works there today.
