Storyゆかたを着た女性が、うちわを手に湖のほとりの石に腰かけ、遠くを見つめています。うしろには、うすい水色の湖と、なだらかな緑の山。神奈川県・箱根の芦ノ湖です。描いたのは、フランスで学び、日本の洋画を大きく変えた黒田清輝。1897年の作品で、国の重要文化財です。
A woman in a summer yukata sits on a rock by a lake with a fan in her hand. She is looking into the distance. Behind her are a pale blue lake and gentle green hills. This is Lake Ashi in Hakone, Kanagawa. The painter is Kuroda Seiki, who studied in France and changed Western-style painting in Japan. He painted it in 1897, and it is an Important Cultural Property.
黒田は、はじめは法律を学ぶためにフランスへ留学しましたが、約2年後に画家になることを決め、それから約7年間、フランスで絵を学びました。帰国後は、外の光の中で見たままの明るい色で描く新しいスタイルを広めました。この絵も、うすい青や緑のやわらかな色で、夏の箱根のすずしい空気をとらえています。モデルは、のちに黒田の妻となる照子です。
Kuroda first went to France to study law. About two years later, he decided to become a painter and studied painting there for about seven years. Back in Japan, he spread a new style that used bright colors, as seen in natural light outdoors. This painting also captures the cool air of a Hakone summer with soft blues and greens. The model is Teruko, who later became Kuroda's wife.
「湖畔」は1900年のパリ万国博覧会にも出品されました。1967年には切手のデザインにもなり、日本の洋画のなかでも特によく知られる一枚です。東京国立博物館が持ち、上野の黒田記念館の特別室で、年に数回、期間を限って公開されています。夏が来るたびに見たくなる、すずしげな名画です。
Lakeside was shown at the 1900 World's Fair in Paris. In 1967, it appeared on a postage stamp, and it is one of the best-known Western-style paintings in Japan. It belongs to the Tokyo National Museum and is shown for limited periods a few times a year in a special room of the Kuroda Memorial Hall in Ueno. It is a cool, fresh painting that people love to see every summer.

えっ！？な裏ネタ
Secretsこの絵のモデル・照子は、のちに黒田清輝の妻になりました。1897年の夏、二人は箱根に滞在していて、そこで描かれたのがこの絵です。おだやかな表情が、画面に静かで親しみのある雰囲気を生んでいます。
Teruko, the model, later became Kuroda's wife. In the summer of 1897, they were staying in Hakone, where he painted this picture. Her calm expression gives the painting a quiet, intimate feeling.
黒田はもともと、法律を学ぶためにフランスへ渡りました。ところがパリで日本人の画家たちにすすめられ、画家に転身。帰国後は東京美術学校で教え、日本の洋画界のリーダーになりました。
Kuroda originally went to France to study law. But in Paris, Japanese artists encouraged him to paint, and he changed his path. After returning, he taught at the Tokyo School of Fine Arts and became a leader of Western-style painting in Japan.
左下のサインは「SEIKI KOVRODA」。Uのかわりに Vの字が使われています。古代ローマの石にきざまれた文字のように、UをVで書く、西洋の古風なしゃれた書き方です。
The signature at the bottom left reads 'SEIKI KOVRODA'. A V is used instead of a U. This is an old-fashioned Western style, like letters carved in stone in ancient Rome.
「湖畔」は1967年の切手趣味週間の記念切手になりました。切手を集める人がとても多かった時代で、切手を通して全国に知られ、今では黒田の洋画の中でも特によく知られた一枚です。
Lakeside appeared on a special stamp for Philatelic Week in 1967. The stamp helped make the painting widely known across Japan. Today it is one of Kuroda's best-known Western-style paintings.
