This is a poster for Gismonda, a play starring the great actress Sarah Bernhardt at the Théâtre de la Renaissance in Paris. It was designed by Alphonse Mucha, who came from what is now the Czech Republic. The actress stands tall in a rich golden costume, with flowers in her hair and a palm branch in her hand. The title is at the top, and the name 'BERNHARDT' appears on the arch behind her.
劇は1894年10月に始まりました。作者は人気劇作家ヴィクトリアン・サルドゥで、中世のアテネが舞台。モザイクのような背景は、その時代の雰囲気に合わせたものです。言い伝えでは、年末に急いで新しいポスターが必要になり、たまたま印刷所にいた、まだ駆け出しのミュシャが引き受けたといいます。ポスターは1895年1月の初めにパリの街にはり出されたといわれます。高さ2メートルをこえる細長い画面に、女優をほぼ等身大で描いた大胆なデザインでした。
The play opened in October 1894. It was written by the popular playwright Victorien Sardou and is set in Athens in the Middle Ages. The mosaic-like background matches that old setting. According to a well-known story, a new poster was needed in a hurry at the end of the year, and Mucha, then little known, happened to be at the printing company and took the job. The poster is said to have gone up on the streets of Paris in early January 1895. It was a bold design: a tall, narrow poster more than two meters high, showing the actress almost life-size.

The poster was a huge hit, and Bernhardt gave Mucha a six-year contract. He went on to design many more posters for her, and his style became a symbol of Art Nouveau. The image here is plate 27 of Les Maîtres de l'Affiche ('Masters of the Poster'), a monthly series of small reprints of famous posters. It was printed by the Chaix company in 1896 and is now in the National Library of France.

Secrets紙の左下に「Les Maîtres de l'Affiche PL. 27」「Imprimerie Chaix」と刷られています。これは1895〜1900年に出た、名作ポスターの縮小版シリーズの印。いっぽう絵の右下には、もとのポスターを刷った「LEMERCIER（ルメルシエ）」の名前が残っています。
In the lower left of the sheet, you can read 'Les Maîtres de l'Affiche PL. 27' and 'Imprimerie Chaix.' This is the mark of a series of small reprints of great posters, published from 1895 to 1900. Inside the picture, at the bottom right, is the name LEMERCIER, the company that printed the original poster.
このポスターは人気が出すぎて、収集家が夜のうちに掲示板から切り取ったり、はり紙屋さんにお金をわたして手に入れたりした、という話が伝わっています。当時のパリでは、ポスターを美術品として集めるブームが起きていました。この縮小版シリーズも、そんなファンのために作られたのです。
There is a story that the poster was so popular that collectors cut copies down from billboards at night or paid poster hangers to get copies. In Paris at that time, collecting posters as art was a big trend. This small reprint series was made for fans like them.
ジスモンダが手に持つのは、しゅろ（ヤシのなかま）の枝です。劇の終わり近く、キリスト教の祭日「しゅろの日曜日（枝の主日）」の行列に加わる場面の姿だとされています。ポスターは、劇のいちばんの見せ場を1枚にまとめたものなのです。
Gismonda holds a palm branch. It is said to show the scene near the end of the play where she joins a procession on Palm Sunday, a Christian holiday. The poster sums up a big moment of the play in a single picture.
サラ・ベルナールは1844年生まれで、この劇のときは50歳でした。それでもポスターでは若々しく気高い姿に描かれ、本人も大満足だったといわれます。ミュシャはこのあと「椿姫」「ロレンザッチオ」「メディア」「ハムレット」など、彼女の舞台ポスターを次々に描きました。
Sarah Bernhardt was born in 1844, so she was fifty when the play opened. Still, the poster shows her as young and noble, and she is said to have loved it. Mucha went on to design many of her posters, such as La Dame aux Camélias, Lorenzaccio, Médée and Hamlet.
