Mucha was born in Moravia, now part of the Czech Republic. At the end of 1894, while working as an illustrator in Paris, he designed a poster for the great actress Sarah Bernhardt's play Gismonda. It was a sensation. His women framed by flowers and flowing hair, with curving lines, became symbols of Art Nouveau. Later he went home and painted his great work, The Slav Epic.
