In 30 seconds
The standard explanation
Yonkoma manga means "four-panel comics." The panels are usually stacked vertically and read from top to bottom. Many follow a pattern called kishotenketsu: set up the scene, develop it, add a twist, then wrap it up. Newspapers have long carried them, and some of today's popular anime started as four-panel comics in magazines.
As a short speech
A full paragraph you can read aloud
In Japan, a short comic strip usually has exactly four panels, and it's called yonkoma manga. Unlike many American comic strips that run left to right, Japanese four-panel comics are usually stacked vertically, so you read them from top to bottom. Many follow a classic structure called kishotenketsu.
The first panel sets up the situation, the second develops it, the third brings an unexpected turn, and the fourth ties everything together, often with a punch line. Japanese students even learn this pattern in school as a way to organize writing. Newspapers have carried four-panel comics for decades.
The most famous is probably Sazae-san, which started in a Fukuoka newspaper in 1946 and later ran for years in the Asahi Shimbun. There are also entire magazines of four-panel comics, and some popular anime, such as K-On!, began as four-panel series. I like them because you can enjoy a whole story in about ten seconds.
Questions people actually ask
And how to answer them.
Why four panels and not three or six?
Four panels fit the kishotenketsu pattern neatly, with one step in each panel. It also fits well in a narrow column of a newspaper page.
Do the stories always have a punch line?
Most newspaper ones do. But many magazine series are more about everyday life and characters than big jokes, so the last panel might just be a small, warm moment.
