Newspapers have long carried them, and some of today's popular anime started as four-panel comics in magazines.

Unlike many American comic strips that run left to right, Japanese four-panel comics are usually stacked vertically, so you read them from top to bottom. Many follow a classic structure called kishotenketsu.
The first panel sets up the situation, the second develops it, the third brings an unexpected turn, and the fourth ties everything together, often with a punch line. Japanese students even learn this pattern in school as a way to organize writing. Newspapers have carried four-panel comics for decades.
The most famous is probably Sazae-san, which started in a Fukuoka newspaper in 1946 and later ran for years in the Asahi Shimbun. There are also entire magazines of four-panel comics, and some popular anime, such as K-On!, began as four-panel series. I like them because you can enjoy a whole story in about ten seconds.

四コマ漫画は「4つのコマの漫画」という意味です。コマはふつう縦に並び、上から下へ読みます。多くは「起承転結」という型に沿っていて、場面を示し、話を進め、ひねりを入れ、最後にまとめます。新聞に長く載ってきたほか、今人気のアニメの中には、雑誌の四コマ漫画から始まったものもあります。

いちばん有名なのはおそらく『サザエさん』で、1946年に福岡の新聞で始まり、のちに朝日新聞で長く連載されました。四コマ漫画だけを載せる雑誌もあり、『けいおん!』のように、四コマの連載から始まった人気アニメもあります。わずか10秒ほどで一つの物語を楽しめるところが、私は好きです。

AMost newspaper ones do. But many magazine series are more about everyday life and characters than big jokes, so the last panel might just be a small, warm moment.
話には必ずオチがあるのですか。新聞のものはたいていあります。でも雑誌の連載の多くは、大きな笑いより日常やキャラクターを描くものなので、最後のコマはちょっとした温かい場面のこともあります。

豆知識Background
四コマ漫画の多くは「起承転結」に沿うとされ、3コマ目の「転」で話をひっくり返すのが腕の見せどころになる。新聞の四コマとして最も有名な『サザエさん』は、1946年4月に福岡の夕刊フクニチで連載が始まり、1949年から1974年までは朝日新聞に掲載された。1980年代ごろからは四コマ漫画だけを載せる専門誌も出てきて、日常のゆるやかな話を描く作品が多く生まれた。そうした雑誌の連載からアニメになった作品もあり、海外のファンが四コマという形式を知るきっかけにもなっている。
