The shortest answer that works

The standard explanation

Japanese textbooks teach the Tokyo standard. Around Osaka and Kyoto people speak Kansai-ben, which differs in pitch, in endings and in vocabulary. Thank you is ookini rather than arigato. Good is ee rather than ii. The negative ends in hen instead of nai. Learners often find it confusing at first, and then find that it is the version of Japanese they hear most on television comedy.

日本語の教科書は東京の標準語を教えます。大阪や京都のあたりでは関西弁を話し、アクセントも語尾も語彙も違います。ありがとうは「おおきに」、いいは「ええ」、否定は「ない」ではなく「へん」で終わります。学習者は最初とまどいますが、テレビのお笑いでいちばん耳にする日本語でもあります。

If you learn Japanese from a textbook and then go to Osaka, you will have a moment of doubt about whether you learned the right language. Kansai-ben, the dialect of the Osaka and Kyoto region, differs from standard Japanese in pitch accent, in verb endings and in everyday words. Thank you becomes ookini. The word for good, ii, becomes ee.

Negatives take hen rather than nai, so wakaranai becomes wakarahen. What makes this dialect unusual is its status. Japan standardized on Tokyo speech through schools and broadcasting, and most regional dialects retreated. Kansai-ben did not, partly because the Osaka region has its own media and commerce, and partly because comedy in Japan is overwhelmingly in Kansai-ben.

Manzai, the two-person stand-up form, is performed in it. The result is that almost everyone in Japan understands it, and it carries a tone: warmer, blunter and funnier than standard Japanese, which is a reputation that Osaka people both enjoy and get tired of.

Questions people actually ask

And how to answer them.

QShould I learn it?

Not instead of standard Japanese. But if you live in the Kansai area, picking up a few phrases is appreciated and makes conversation easier. Using it badly is treated as charming rather than rude.

標準語のかわりに習うものではありません。ただ関西に住むなら、いくつか覚えると喜ばれますし、会話が楽になります。下手に使っても、失礼ではなく微笑ましいと受け取られます。

QIs it hard to understand?

The vocabulary is the easy part; the pitch is what throws people. The same word can carry a different pitch pattern than in Tokyo speech, which is why it sounds like a different language before you get used to it.

語彙より、アクセントのほうが難しいところです。同じ語でも東京の言葉と高低の形が違うので、慣れるまでは別の言語のように聞こえます。

QIs it one dialect?

No. Osaka, Kyoto, Kobe and Nara all differ, and people from the region can usually tell them apart. Kyoto speech is considered softer and more indirect, Osaka speech more direct.

ひとつではありません。大阪、京都、神戸、奈良はそれぞれ違い、地元の人は聞き分けます。京都の言葉はやわらかく遠回し、大阪の言葉は率直だとされます。

A common misunderstanding

MYTHAll Japanese people speak the same way, with regional dialects mostly gone.

FACTDialects survive across Japan, and Kansai-ben in particular is used publicly, on national television and in business, not just at home.
