Vocaloid is a singing voice synthesizer developed by Yamaha and announced in 2003. The software itself is just a tool, but what made it a cultural event was Hatsune Miku, a Vocaloid product released in 2007 with a voice built from recordings of an actress and a turquoise-haired character on the box.
Amateur musicians bought it, wrote songs, uploaded them to video sites, and other people drew art and made videos for those songs. Nobody was in charge.
Within a few years there were hundreds of thousands of songs, concerts with the character projected on stage, and a fan base outside Japan. To me the interesting part is not the technology but the ownership: a company sold a voice, and the public decided who the singer was.
ボーカロイドはヤマハが開発した歌声合成の技術で、2003年に発表されました。ソフト自体はただの道具ですが、それを文化的な出来事にしたのが、2007年発売のボーカロイド製品、初音ミクです。
声は女性声優の録音からつくられ、箱には水色の髪のキャラクターが描かれていました。アマチュアの音楽家がそれを買って曲を書き、動画サイトに上げ、別の人がその曲に絵をつけ、動画をつくりました。誰も統括していません。
数年のうちに何十万もの曲が生まれ、キャラクターを舞台に映写する公演が開かれ、海外にもファンができました。私が面白いと思うのは技術より所有の話です。会社が売ったのは声で、歌手が誰であるかは受け手が決めたのです。
