Tamagotchi is a small, egg-shaped toy with a digital pet inside. It was made by the toy company Bandai and first went on sale in Japan in 1996. The name combines tamago, the Japanese word for egg, with "watch." When you turn it on, a creature hatches from an egg on the screen. Then it's your job to feed it, clean up its poop, and play games with it.
If you ignore it, it gets sick, and in the original version, it could even die. What it grows into depends on how well you take care of it. When it first came out, it was so popular that stores couldn't keep it in stock, and at one point, more than 10,000 people a day were calling to ask where they could buy one.
