The standard explanation

Noboribetsu Onsen is in southwestern Hokkaido, inside Shikotsu-Toya National Park. Just behind the town is Jigokudani, or Hell Valley, an old volcanic crater where hot water and steam come out of the ground. The city says the area has nine types of spring water, so it is sometimes called a department store of hot springs.

A full paragraph you can read aloud

Noboribetsu Onsen is one of the best-known hot spring towns in Hokkaido. Right behind the hotels is Jigokudani, which means Hell Valley. It is a crater about 450 meters long, left by a volcanic eruption long ago. Steam rises from the rocks, the ground is gray and yellow, and the air smells of sulfur.

Visitors walk through it on wooden paths. This valley is the main source of the town's hot water, and according to the city, about 10,000 tons of water come out naturally every day. The city also says there are nine types of spring water here, including sulfur springs and iron springs, so you can try different baths on one trip.

Fitting the name Hell Valley, the town uses oni, or Japanese demons, as a symbol, and you will see demon statues around town. They look more friendly than scary. For me, the best time to visit is winter, when you can sit in a hot outdoor bath while snow falls around you.

Questions people actually ask

And how to answer them.

Q

Why is it called Hell Valley?

Because it looks like the hells in old Buddhist pictures, with boiling water, steam and a strong smell of sulfur. In Japan, steaming volcanic places like this are often called jigoku, which means hell.

Q

Can I bathe in the valley itself?

No. The water there is far too hot, so you must stay on the paths. The hot water is piped down to the hotels and public baths in town, and you bathe there.
