The standard explanation
Kobudo is a general name for the old schools of Japanese martial arts, called ryuha, that were founded before the Meiji Restoration of 1868. They teach the sword, the spear, the staff, grappling and other skills, often several within one school. Training is mostly kata, set forms practiced with a partner, and most schools hold no competitions. Each school is passed down from teacher to student, sometimes over many generations.
As a short speech
A full paragraph you can read aloud
When people think of Japanese martial arts, they usually picture judo or kendo, which are sports with matches and champions. Kobudo is much older. The word means "old martial ways," and it covers many schools, called ryuha, that go back to the age of the samurai.
Many of them teach several weapons, such as the sword, the spear, the staff and the naginata, a long pole with a curved blade, along with ways to fight without a weapon. What makes kobudo different is how it's practiced. In most schools, there are no tournaments and no winners. Students learn kata, fixed sequences done with a partner, and repeat them for years, exactly as the school has handed them down.
In many schools, students receive licenses as they progress, and the full license is traditionally called menkyo kaiden. Some schools show their kata in public demonstrations, sometimes as an offering at a shrine. For me, watching one feels less like a sport and more like seeing living history.
Questions people actually ask
And how to answer them.
Why don't they have competitions?
Most of these schools were created to prepare for real fighting, not for sport. Many of their techniques are too dangerous to use freely against an opponent, so they're practiced as set forms with a partner who knows what's coming.
How old are these schools?
It varies a lot. Tenshin Shoden Katori Shinto-ryu is said to go back to the 1400s, while other schools were founded in the 1800s. Founding dates are often traditional accounts rather than records you can check.
Can foreigners learn kobudo?
Some schools do accept foreign students, and a few have groups overseas. But each school decides for itself, and many expect a long commitment, so it's best to ask through a proper introduction.
