The standard explanation
Kanashibari is when you wake up in the night, your mind is clear, but your body won't move. Some people also feel pressure on their chest or sense someone in the room. In Japanese ghost stories it is often blamed on spirits. Doctors call it sleep paralysis, and it is common and usually harmless.
As a short speech
A full paragraph you can read aloud
Have you ever woken up in the middle of the night and found that you couldn't move a finger? In Japan, this is called kanashibari. The word is said to have originally described being frozen in place by a spell, and many Japanese people still connect it with ghosts. In ghost stories, someone is pinned to their futon while a figure sits on their chest.
Medically, though, it has a plain name: sleep paralysis. During the dreaming stage of sleep, the brain switches off most of the body's muscles so that we don't act out our dreams. Sometimes the mind wakes up before the muscles are switched back on. Because the brain is still half dreaming, people may also see shapes or hear sounds that aren't there.
It tends to happen when people are tired, stressed or sleeping at odd hours. It usually passes within a minute or two. Many cultures have their own story for this experience, which I find fascinating, but the Japanese word is the one most of my friends actually use.
Questions people actually ask
And how to answer them.
Is kanashibari dangerous?
In most cases, no. It feels frightening, but it usually ends on its own within a minute or two. If it happens very often or you feel very sleepy during the day, it is worth seeing a doctor.
Do Japanese people really think it's caused by ghosts?
Some people half-believe it, and it is a classic topic for ghost stories on TV and at summer camps. But most people also know it is a sleep thing, and they joke about it more than they fear it.
A common misunderstanding
MYTHKanashibari only happens in haunted places.
