The standard explanation

Ittan momen is a yokai, or creature from Japanese folklore, that looks like a long strip of white cloth. Ittan is a traditional length of fabric, about enough for one kimono, and momen means cotton. In old stories, it flies at night and wraps itself around people. Thanks to the manga GeGeGe no Kitaro, many Japanese people now think of it as a friendly flying cloth.

As a short speech

A full paragraph you can read aloud

Imagine walking home on a dark night when a long white cloth comes flying toward you out of nowhere. That is ittan momen, one of Japan's yokai, or folklore creatures. The name is simple. Ittan is an old unit for a roll of fabric, roughly enough to make one kimono, and momen means cotton.

So the name just means "a roll of cotton cloth." In the old stories, said to come from the southern part of Kyushu, it flies through the evening sky and wraps itself around a person's face or neck. In other words, it was a scary story. Today, though, most Japanese people know a very different ittan momen.

In Shigeru Mizuki's manga GeGeGe no Kitaro, it is a kind and funny character who speaks with a Kyushu accent and carries the hero through the sky like a flying carpet. I love how a frightening ghost story turned into one of the most popular yokai characters in Japan.

Questions people actually ask

And how to answer them.

Q

Is it a ghost of a person?

No. In Japanese folklore, a yokai is different from the ghost of someone who died. Ittan momen is more like a strange creature or force that takes the form of cloth.

Q

Why is it so popular now if it was scary?

Mostly because of GeGeGe no Kitaro, which has been made into anime many times. There, it's a loyal friend who flies the hero around. Its simple shape also makes it easy to turn into toys and goods.
