The standard explanation

Nurikabe is a yokai from folk tales in northern Kyushu. The story goes that when you walk along a road at night, an invisible wall suddenly stops you, and pushing it does nothing. Today most people picture it as a big gray wall with eyes and short legs. That image comes from the manga artist Mizuki Shigeru, not from the old tales.

A full paragraph you can read aloud

Nurikabe is a Japanese yokai, or folk spirit, and it is one of the strangest. In the original tale from the coast of Fukuoka Prefecture, there is nothing to see at all. You are walking along a road at night when suddenly you cannot move forward, as if an invisible wall were standing in front of you.

Pushing it or going around it does not work. According to the story, the only way through is to tap near the bottom of the wall with a stick, and then it disappears. The folklorist Yanagita Kunio recorded this tale in the 1930s.

Most Japanese people, however, imagine something very different: a huge, flat gray wall with small eyes and stubby legs. That is the friendly nurikabe from Mizuki Shigeru's manga about yokai, which made it famous. I like this yokai because it seems to turn a simple feeling, like being too tired to walk any farther, into a story.

Questions people actually ask

And how to answer them.

Q

So what does a nurikabe really look like?

In the old tale, it has no shape at all, because it is invisible. There is also an Edo-period picture labeled nurikabe that shows a beast with three eyes, but scholars are not sure it is the same yokai.

Q

What does the name mean?

Nuri means plastering, and kabe means wall, so it is something like a plastered wall. It describes the feeling of a solid wall blocking the road.

A common misunderstanding

MYTHNurikabe has always been drawn as a gray wall with eyes and legs.
