Iki is a kind of understated stylishness that stops being itself the moment it is shown off.

The standard explanation
Iki is an aesthetic that grew up among the townspeople of Edo. It values restraint, a light touch and a certain detachment: a plain outer garment with an extravagant lining, a witty reply rather than an argument. Effort must not show. The philosopher Kuki Shuzo analysed it in a book published in 1930.
As a short speech
A full paragraph you can read aloud
Iki is a word for style, but a very particular kind. It came out of the merchant and craft districts of Edo, where sumptuary rules limited what ordinary townspeople could wear, and the response was to put the expensive material on the inside. A plain gray coat with a hand-painted lining that only flashes when you move is the clearest image of iki.
Beyond clothes it describes a manner: light, quick, a little detached, never earnest and never straining. Someone who explains their own joke is not iki. Someone who spends heavily to be noticed is not iki either, and there is a matching word, yabo, for the person who tries too hard and misses.
The philosopher Kuki Shuzo wrote a study of it in 1930 arguing that it combines allure, a certain pride that refuses to cling, and a resignation about how things go. It is an Edo, Tokyo-side sensibility, and people from Kyoto and Osaka would describe their own aesthetics differently, which is worth saying rather than presenting iki as the Japanese taste.
Questions people actually ask
And how to answer them.
QWhat is the opposite?
Yabo, which means unrefined or heavy-handed: explaining too much, dressing to impress, pressing a point after it has been made. The pair is more useful than either word alone.
QIs it the same as wabi-sabi?
No. Wabi-sabi values the plain, the worn and the imperfect, often in quiet and rural terms. Iki is urban, a little flirtatious and sharper, and it belongs to the townspeople of a big city rather than to a tea hut.
QCan a foreigner be described as iki?
Yes, and it is a real compliment. It is about manner rather than nationality, and it is most likely to be said of someone who handled a situation lightly and did not make a fuss about it.
