Gunpla is the name for plastic model kits based on Gundam, a long-running anime series about giant robots, called mobile suits, that people pilot in battle. The first TV series aired in 1979, and the first kit, a simple Gundam that cost 300 yen, went on sale in July 1980.
Gunpla soon became a huge craze among children. Today's kits are very different. Most need no glue and no paint, because the parts are already molded in color and simply snap together.
Some kits have hundreds of parts and moving joints, so you can pose the robot however you like. Many adults who built them as kids came back to the hobby later. I think Gunpla is interesting because it turns watching anime into making something with your own hands.

Do I need to watch Gundam to enjoy Gunpla?
Not really. Many people just enjoy building and posing the robots. But knowing the story makes it more fun to choose which one to build.

Is it hard to build one?
Beginner kits are easy and take an hour or two. Most kits don't need glue or paint, so all you really need is a pair of cutters to remove the parts.
