As a short speech
A full paragraph you can read aloud
In Japan, elementary school usually ends in the afternoon, but many parents work until evening. That gap is filled by gakudo hoiku, or after-school care. After classes, children walk to a club room, often inside the school or close by. They do their homework, play outside, have a snack and stay until a parent comes to pick them up.
During long school holidays, many clubs open from the morning, and in many areas, children bring a packed lunch. The number of children using these clubs has been rising as more families have two working parents. According to the government, about 1.6 million children were using them in May 2026, a record high, and more than 14,000 were still on waiting lists.
People even talk about the first-grade wall: daycare centers often stay open late, but after-school care may close earlier, so parents suddenly struggle when their child starts school. For many families, gakudo is like a second home.
Questions people actually ask
And how to answer them.
Is it the same as a cram school?
No. A juku, or cram school, is a place to study for better grades. Gakudo is a safe place to stay after school, so children mostly play, do homework and relax.
Can any child go?
It's mainly for children whose parents work or can't look after them during the day, and families usually apply through their city or town. In some areas, there are more applicants than places, so not everyone gets in.
Do kids go there during summer vacation?
Yes, and that's when many families need it most. A lot of clubs open from the morning on school holidays, and children spend the whole day there.
