The standard explanation

Botan doro is often counted among Japan's three great ghost stories. A young man falls in love with a beautiful woman, Otsuyu, who visits him at night with her maid, who carries a lantern decorated with peonies. In fact, she is a ghost. The story came from China, was retold in Japanese in the 1600s, and became famous through the rakugo storyteller San'yutei Encho.

Botan doro, or The Peony Lantern, is a classic Japanese ghost story, but it is also a love story. During the Obon season, when the dead are believed to return, a young man named Shinzaburo is visited every night by a beautiful woman, Otsuyu, and her maid, who carries a lantern decorated with peonies.

You can hear Otsuyu coming because of the sound of her wooden sandals: karan, koron. This is interesting, because Japanese ghosts are often drawn without feet. One night, a man peeks into the house and sees Shinzaburo holding a skeleton.

The story first came from a Chinese tale, was retold in Japanese in the 1600s, and was made into a long rakugo story by San'yutei Encho in the Meiji period. In 1884, his telling was written down in shorthand and published as a book. It is still performed in rakugo and kabuki today. For me, the scariest part is not the ghost, but the people around Shinzaburo.

Questions people actually ask

And how to answer them.

Q

Why is the story connected to Obon?

Obon is the time when people believe the spirits of the dead come home, and families hang lanterns to guide them. So a woman walking at night with a lantern fits the season perfectly.

Q

Is it a scary story or a sad one?

Both. Otsuyu dies loving Shinzaburo and keeps coming back to him. But in Encho's version, the people who betray Shinzaburo for money are just as frightening as the ghost.

A common misunderstanding

MYTHAll Japanese ghosts are vengeful spirits who want to hurt people.

FACTNot always. In Botan doro, Otsuyu returns because she loves Shinzaburo, not because she hates him.
