Little Red Riding-Hood

When May was six years old, her grandma made her a red coat with a hood.メイが六さいのとき、おばあさんが、ずきんのついた赤い上着をつくってくれました。 She looked so pretty in it that the children all called her "Red Riding-Hood."それを着たメイがとてもかわいかったので、子どもたちはみんな、メイのことを「赤ずきん」とよびました。

One day her mama said, "I want you to take this cake and some butter to grandma."ある日、お母さんが言いました。「このケーキとバターを、おばあさんのところへとどけてちょうだい。」

Red Riding-Hood was very glad to go.赤ずきんは、大よろこびで出かけることにしました。 She always had a good time at grandma's.おばあさんの家に行くと、いつも楽しくすごせたのです。

She put the things into her little basket and ran off.赤ずきんは、ケーキとバターを小さなかごに入れて、走っていきました。

When Red Riding-Hood came to the wood, she met a big wolf.赤ずきんが森に来ると、大きなオオカミに会いました。

"Where are you going?" said the wolf.「どこへ行くんだい？」とオオカミは言いました。

Red Riding-Hood said, "I am going to see my grandma.赤ずきんは言いました。「おばあさんに会いに行くの。 Mama has made her a cake and some butter."お母さんが、おばあさんにケーキとバターをつくったのよ。」

"Does she live far?" said the wolf.「おばあさんは遠くに住んでいるのかい？」とオオカミは言いました。

"Yes," said Red Riding-Hood, "in the white house by the mill."「ええ。」と赤ずきんは言いました。「水車小屋のそばの白い家よ。」

"I will go too, and we shall see who will get there first," said the wolf.「おれも行こう。どっちが先に着くか、きょうそうだ。」とオオカミは言いました。

The wolf ran off and took a short way, but Red Riding-Hood stopped to pick some flowers.オオカミは走っていって近道をしましたが、赤ずきんは足を止めて、花をつみました。

When the wolf got to the house, he tapped on the door.オオカミは家に着くと、戸をトントンとたたきました。

The grandma said, "Who is there?"おばあさんは「どなた？」と言いました。 The wolf made his voice as soft as he could.オオカミは、できるだけやさしい声を出しました。 He said, "It is little Red Riding-Hood, grandma."そして言いました。「赤ずきんよ、おばあさん。」

Then the old lady said, "Pull the string and the door will open."するとおばあさんは言いました。「ひもを引けば、戸があきますよ。」

The wolf pulled the string and the door opened.オオカミがひもを引くと、戸があきました。

He ran in and ate the poor old lady.オオカミはかけこんで、かわいそうなおばあさんを食べてしまいました。

Then he jumped into her bed and put on her cap.それからおばあさんのベッドにとびこんで、おばあさんのぼうしをかぶりました。

When Red Riding-Hood tapped on the door, the wolf called out, "Who is there?"赤ずきんが戸をたたくと、オオカミは「どなた？」と声をかけました。 Red Riding-Hood said, "It is your little Red Riding-Hood, grandma."赤ずきんは言いました。「あなたの赤ずきんよ、おばあさん。」

Then the wolf said, "Pull the string and the door will open."するとオオカミは言いました。「ひもを引けば、戸があきますよ。」

When she went in, she said, "Look, grandma, see the cake and butter mama has sent you."中に入ると、赤ずきんは言いました。「見て、おばあさん。お母さんがケーキとバターをとどけてくれたのよ。」

"Thank you, dear, put them on the table and come here."「ありがとう。テーブルの上において、こっちへおいで。」

When Red Riding-Hood went near the bed, she said, "Oh, grandma, how big your arms are!"赤ずきんはベッドのそばに行くと、言いました。「まあ、おばあさん、なんて大きなうでなの！」

"The better to hug you, my dear."「おまえをだきしめるためさ。」

"How big your ears are, grandma."「なんて大きな耳なの、おばあさん。」

"The better to hear you, my dear."「おまえの声をよく聞くためさ。」

"How big your eyes are, grandma."「なんて大きな目なの、おばあさん。」

"The better to see you, my dear."「おまえをよく見るためさ。」

"How big your teeth are, grandma!"「なんて大きな歯なの、おばあさん！」

"The better to eat you."「おまえを食べるためさ。」

Then the cruel wolf jumped up and ate poor little Red Riding-Hood.そう言うと、わるいオオカミはとびかかって、かわいそうな赤ずきんを食べてしまいました。

Just then a hunter came by.ちょうどそのとき、かりゅうどが通りかかりました。 He heard Red Riding-Hood scream.かりゅうどは、赤ずきんのさけび声を聞きました。 The hunter ran into the house and killed the old wolf.かりゅうどは家にかけこんで、年とったオオカミをやっつけました。

When he cut the wolf open, out jumped Little Red Riding-Hood and her grandma.かりゅうどがオオカミのおなかを切りひらくと、赤ずきんとおばあさんがとび出してきました。
