Jason and the Dragon

The next day Jason went to the king and said, "Now, give me the golden fleece."次の日、イアソンは王さまのところへ行って言いました。「さあ、金の毛皮をください。」

The king did not give it to him, but said, "Come again."王さまは毛皮をわたさずに、「また来なさい。」と言いました。

Then Medea said, "If you want the golden fleece, you must help yourself.するとメデイアが言いました。「金の毛皮がほしいなら、自分で取るしかありません。 My father will not give it to you.父は、あなたにわたすつもりはないのです。 A dragon is by the tree where the golden fleece is, and he never sleeps.金の毛皮がある木のそばには、りゅうがいて、決してねむりません。 He is always hungry and eats people if they go near him.りゅうはいつもおなかをすかせていて、近づく人を食べてしまいます。 I can not kill him but I can make him sleep.わたしにはりゅうをころすことはできませんが、ねむらせることはできます。 He is very fond of cake.りゅうはケーキが大好きなのです。 I will make some cake and put in something to make the dragon sleep."ケーキをつくって、りゅうがねむくなるものを入れておきましょう。」

So Medea made the cakes and Jason took them and threw them to the dragon.そこでメデイアはケーキをつくり、イアソンはそれを持っていって、りゅうに投げてやりました。

The dragon ate them all and went to sleep.りゅうはケーキをのこらず食べて、ねむってしまいました。

Then Jason climbed over the dragon and took the nail out of the tree.そこでイアソンは、りゅうの上をのりこえて、木からくぎをぬきました。

He put the golden fleece under his coat and ran to the ship Argo.イアソンは金の毛皮を上着の下に入れて、アルゴ号へ走っていきました。

Medea went with him and became his wife.メデイアもいっしょに行って、イアソンのおよめさんになりました。

Oh, how angry the king was!ああ、王さまのおこったことといったら！ He had lost the golden fleece and the brass bulls and the dragon's teeth.金の毛皮も、しんちゅうの牛も、りゅうの歯も、なくしてしまったのです。 And now his daughter was gone.そのうえ、むすめまでいなくなってしまいました。

He sent his men in ships to take Jason, but they could not get him.王さまは、イアソンをつかまえようと、家来たちを船で送り出しましたが、つかまえることはできませんでした。

At last Medea and Jason and the other Argonauts came to Greece.とうとう、メデイアとイアソンと、ほかのアルゴ号のゆうしたちは、ギリシャに着きました。

Jason's father was there.そこには、イアソンのお父さんがいました。 He was a very old man.お父さんは、とても年をとっていました。 Jason wanted his father to be king, so he asked Medea to make the old man young.イアソンはお父さんに王さまになってほしかったので、お父さんをわかがえらせてくれるよう、メデイアにたのみました。

Then Medea took her carriage and flew through the air.そこでメデイアは車に乗って、空を飛んでいきました。

She did not come back for nine days.メデイアは、九日のあいだもどってきませんでした。 She picked flowers from the hills.メデイアは、おかで花をつみました。 She found all kinds of stones, too.いろいろな石も見つけました。

When she went home she put all these things into a pot and cooked them.家に帰ると、メデイアはそれをみんななべに入れて、にました。

Then she put a stick into the pot and leaves grew on it.それから、なべにぼうを入れると、ぼうから葉っぱが生えてきました。

Some of the juice fell on the ground and grass grew up.しるが少し地面にこぼれると、草が生えてきました。

So Medea knew the juice would make things grow.それでメデイアは、このしるには物を育てる力があるとわかりました。

Jason's father went to sleep and Medea put some of the juice into his mouth.イアソンのお父さんがねむると、メデイアはそのしるを少し、お父さんの口に入れました。

His white hair turned black and teeth grew in his mouth.すると、白いかみの毛は黒くなり、口には歯が生えてきました。

When he woke up, he looked and felt like a young man.目をさましたお父さんは、見た目も気分もわか者のようになっていました。

He lived many years and when he died Jason was king.お父さんは何年も長生きしました。そしてお父さんがなくなると、イアソンが王さまになりました。
