Jason and the Harpies

The ship Argo sailed a long way.アルゴ号は、長い旅をつづけました。 There were two strong men on the ship.船には、二人の力持ちの男が乗っていました。 They had wings and could fly.二人にはつばさがあって、空を飛ぶことができました。

One day the Argo came to a land where the blind king lived.ある日、アルゴ号は、目の見えない王さまが住んでいる国に着きました。

This poor king had a hard time.このかわいそうな王さまは、こまっていました。 When he sat down to the table to eat, some ugly birds called Harpies, came too.王さまがごはんを食べようとテーブルにつくと、ハーピーというみにくい鳥たちもやってくるのです。 The Harpies had skin like brass and nobody could hurt them.ハーピーは、しんちゅうのようなかたい皮をしていて、だれもきずつけることができませんでした。 They had claws of iron, and scratched people when they tried to drive them away.鉄のつめを持っていて、追いはらおうとすると、人をひっかきました。

When the king's dinner was ready, the Harpies came and took it away.王さまのごはんができると、ハーピーたちがやってきて、持っていってしまうのです。 When Jason and his men came, the king told them all about it.イアソンたちがやってくると、王さまはそのことをすっかり話しました。 Jason said they would help him.イアソンは、王さまを助けてあげようと言いました。

They all sat down to the table.みんなでテーブルにつきました。 When the food was put on the table, the Harpies came flying in.食べ物がテーブルにならべられると、ハーピーたちが飛びこんできました。 Jason and his men took their swords.イアソンとなか間たちは、つるぎを手に取りました。

They cut at the Harpies but could not hurt them.ハーピーに切りかかりましたが、きずつけることはできませんでした。

Then the two men with wings flew up in the air.すると、つばさのある二人の男が、空へ飛び上がりました。 The Harpies were afraid and flew away.ハーピーたちはこわがって、飛んでにげていきました。 The men flew after them.二人の男は、ハーピーを追いかけていきました。

At last the Harpies grew very tired and fell into the sea and were drowned.とうとうハーピーたちはすっかりつかれて、海に落ちて、しずんでしまいました。

Then the men with wings came back.それから、つばさのある二人がもどってきました。

Now the blind king could eat all he wanted.これで、目の見えない王さまは、すきなだけ食べられるようになりました。

It was now time for Jason and his friends to go away.いよいよ、イアソンとなか間たちが出発するときがきました。

The king thanked them over and over again for helping him.王さまは、助けてくれたお礼を何度も何度も言いました。

When they said good-bye, he told them how to get to the land where they would find the golden fleece.さようならを言うとき、王さまは、金の毛皮がある国への行き方を教えてくれました。

On the sea where Jason and his men had to sail, were two big rocks.イアソンたちが進まなければならない海には、二つの大きな岩がありました。 These rocks moved on the waterlike icebergs.この岩は、氷山のように水の上を動いていました。

They were as high as a big hill.岩は、大きな山ほどの高さがありました。 They would come close to each other, then they would go far apart.二つの岩はぐっと近づいたかと思うと、またはなれていくのでした。

When fishes swam in the water the rocks would come together and kill the fishes.魚が水の中を泳いでいると、岩はぶつかり合って、魚をつぶしてしまいました。

If birds flew in the air, the rocks would come together and kill birds.鳥が空を飛んでいると、岩はぶつかり合って、鳥をつぶしてしまいました。

If a boat sailed on the water, the rocks would come together and break the boat into little pieces.船が水の上を進んでいると、岩はぶつかり合って、船をこなごなにくだいてしまいました。

These rocks had been put in the sea, so no one could go to the land where the golden fleece was.この岩は、だれも金の毛皮のある国へ行けないように、海においてあったのです。

When the ship Argo came to the rocks, Jason sent a dove out.アルゴ号が岩のところに来ると、イアソンはハトを一羽はなしました。

The rocks came together when the dove was almost past.ハトがもう少しで通りぬけるというときに、岩がぶつかり合いました。

Then they went far apart.それから岩は、大きくはなれていきました。 Jason made his men row as hard as they could.イアソンはなか間たちに、力いっぱい船をこがせました。

The rocks began to come together.岩がまた近づきはじめました。 "Row hard, my men," said Jason.「力いっぱいこげ、みんな！」とイアソンは言いました。

Just as they got past, the rocks hit, but Jason and his men were all right.ちょうど通りぬけたとき、岩がぶつかり合いましたが、イアソンたちはぶじでした。

So they came to Colchis.こうして、みんなはコルキスに着きました。
