The Apples of Idun

Once upon a time three of the gods went on a journey.むかしむかし、三人の神さまが旅に出かけました。

One was Thor and one was Loki.ひとりはトールで、ひとりはロキでした。 Loki was ugly and mean.ロキはみにくくて、いじわるでした。

The gods liked to walk over the hills and rocks.神さまたちは、おかや岩の上を歩くのが好きでした。 They could go very fast for they were so big.神さまたちはとても大きかったので、とても速く進むことができました。

The gods walked on and on.神さまたちは、どんどん歩いていきました。

At last they got very hungry.とうとう、とてもおなかがすいてきました。 Then they came to a field with cattle.そのとき、牛のいる野原にやってきました。

Thor killed a big ox and put the pieces into a pot.トールは大きな牛を一頭たおして、肉をなべに入れました。

They made a big fire but the meat would not cook.大きな火をたきましたが、肉はちっともにえませんでした。 They made the fire bigger and bigger, but the meat would not cook.火をどんどん大きくしましたが、それでも肉はにえませんでした。

Then the gods were very cross.神さまたちは、すっかりきげんが悪くなりました。

Some one said, "Give me my share, and I will make the meat cook."だれかが言いました。「わたしにも分け前をくれたら、肉をにえるようにしてあげよう。」

The gods looked to see who was talking.神さまたちは、だれが話しているのかと見まわしました。 There in an oak tree was a big eagle.すると、カシの木に大きなワシがいました。

The gods were so hungry that they said, "Well, we will."神さまたちはとてもおなかがすいていたので、「よし、わかった。」と言いました。

The supper was ready in a minute.夕ごはんは、あっというまにできあがりました。

Then the eagle flew down to get his share.すると、ワシが自分の分け前をとりに飛んできました。 He took the four legs and there was not much left but the ribs.ワシが四本の足をとっていったので、あとにはあばらほねのほかには、あまりのこりませんでした。

This made Loki cross for he was very hungry.ロキはとてもおなかがすいていたので、はらを立てました。 He took a long pole to hit the eagle.ロキは長いぼうを取って、ワシをたたこうとしました。 But the pole stuck to the eagle's claws.ところが、ぼうはワシのつめにくっついてしまいました。 The other end stuck to Loki.ぼうのもう一方のはしは、ロキにくっついてしまいました。

Then the eagle flew away.そしてワシは飛び去りました。 He did not fly high.ワシは高くは飛びませんでした。 He flew just high enough for Loki to hit against the stones.ちょうどロキが石にぶつかるくらいの高さを飛んだのです。

Loki said, "Please let me go!ロキは言いました。「どうか、はなしてくれ！ Oh, please let me go!"ああ、どうか、はなしてくれ！」

But the eagle said, "No, you tried to kill me.けれどもワシは言いました。「いやだ。おまえはわたしをころそうとした。 I will not let you go."はなしてなどやるものか。」

And the eagle hit him against the stones.そしてワシは、ロキを石にぶつけました。

Loki said again, "Please let me go!"ロキはまた言いました。「どうか、はなしてくれ！」

But the eagle said, "No, I have you now."けれどもワシは言いました。「いやだ。もうつかまえたぞ。」

Then Loki knew the eagle was a giant and not a bird.そのときロキは、このワシは鳥ではなく、きょ人だと気がつきました。

This giant had a suit of eagle's feathers.このきょ人は、ワシの羽でできた服を持っていたのです。 He was flying in his eagle suit when he saw Loki.きょ人は、ワシの服を着て飛んでいたときに、ロキを見つけたのでした。

Now the gods lived in a city named Asgard.さて、神さまたちは、アスガルドという町に住んでいました。

In this city Idun kept the beautiful golden apples.この町で、イズンという女神が、美しい金のリンゴを守っていました。 When the gods felt they were growing old, they ate the apples and were young again.神さまたちは、自分が年をとってきたと感じると、そのリンゴを食べて、またわかがえるのでした。

The giant wanted to be like the gods.きょ人は、神さまたちのようになりたいと思っていました。 So he said to Loki, "I will let you go, if you will get me the apples of Idun."そこで、きょ人はロキに言いました。「イズンのリンゴを持ってきてくれたら、はなしてやろう。」

But Loki said, "I can't do that."けれどもロキは言いました。「そんなことはできない。」

So the eagle bumped him on the stones again.そこでワシは、またロキを石にぶつけました。

Then Loki said, "I can't stand this.するとロキは言いました。「もうがまんできない。 I will get the apples for you."リンゴを持ってきてやるよ。」

Loki and the eagle went to the city.ロキとワシは、町へ行きました。 The eagle stayed by the gate, but Loki went into the city.ワシは門のそばでまっていて、ロキが町に入っていきました。 He went up to Idun.ロキはイズンのところへ行きました。 She was putting the apples into a beautiful golden box.イズンは、リンゴを美しい金の箱に入れているところでした。

Loki said, "Good morning, Idun Those are beautiful apples."ロキは言いました。「おはよう、イズン。きれいなリンゴだね。」

And Idun said, "Yes, they are beautiful."するとイズンは言いました。「ええ、きれいでしょう。」 "I saw some just like them, the other day," said Loki.「このあいだ、これとそっくりなリンゴを見たよ。」とロキは言いました。

Idun knew there were no other apples like these, and she said, "That is strange.イズンは、このほかにこんなリンゴはないと知っていたので、言いました。「それはふしぎね。 I would like to see them."見てみたいわ。」

Loki said, "Come with me and I will show them to you.ロキは言いました。「いっしょにおいで。見せてあげるよ。 It is only a little way.ほんのすぐそこさ。 Bring your apples with you."きみのリンゴも持っておいで。」

As soon as Idun was out of the gates the eagle flew down.イズンが門から出たとたん、ワシが飛びおりてきました。 He picked her up in his claws.ワシはつめでイズンをつかみ上げました。 Then he flew away with her to his home.そして、イズンをつれて、自分の家へ飛んでいってしまいました。

Day after day passed and Idun did not come back.何日も何日もすぎましたが、イズンはもどってきませんでした。 The gods did not have the golden apples to eat, so they began to get old.神さまたちは金のリンゴが食べられないので、年をとりはじめました。

At last they said, "Who let the apples go?"とうとう神さまたちは言いました。「リンゴを持ち出させたのはだれだ？」

Then Loki looked pale and the gods said, "Loki, you did it."するとロキの顔が青くなったので、神さまたちは言いました。「ロキ、おまえのしわざだな。」 And Loki said, "Yes, I did."ロキは言いました。「ああ、そうだよ。」

He did not tell a story that time.そのときは、ロキはうそをつきませんでした。

Then Loki said, "I will get Idun and the apples back, if I may have the falcon suit."そしてロキは言いました。「ハヤブサの服をかしてくれたら、イズンとリンゴをとりもどしてくるよ。」

The gods said, "You may have it, if you will bring the apples back."神さまたちは言いました。「リンゴをとりもどしてくるなら、かしてやろう。」

Loki put on the falcon suit and flew away.ロキはハヤブサの服を着て、飛んでいきました。 He looked like a big bird flying.ロキは、大きな鳥が飛んでいるように見えました。

When Loki came to the giant's home, he was glad the giant was not there.ロキがきょ人の家に着くと、うまいことにきょ人はるすでした。 He changed Idun into a nut and then flew away with the nut.ロキはイズンを木の実にかえて、その木の実を持って飛び去りました。

When the giant came home, Idun was gone.きょ人が家に帰ってくると、イズンはいなくなっていました。 The golden apples were gone, too.金のリンゴもなくなっていました。

Then the giant put on his eagle suit and flew after Loki.そこできょ人は、ワシの服を着て、ロキを追いかけました。

Loki heard the eagle coming.ロキは、ワシが追いかけてくる音を聞きました。 Loki flew faster.ロキは、もっと速く飛びました。

Poor Loki was all out of breath.かわいそうに、ロキはすっかり息が切れてしまいました。 The eagle flew faster and faster.ワシは、どんどん速く飛んできました。

Then the gods got on the walls to look for Loki.そのとき、神さまたちはロキをさがそうと、町のかべの上にのぼりました。 They saw him coming and the eagle after him.ロキが飛んでくるのと、そのあとをワシが追いかけてくるのが見えました。

So they made fires on the walls.そこで神さまたちは、かべの上にたきぎをつみました。 At last Loki flew over the walls.とうとうロキは、かべをこえて飛んできました。

Then the gods lighted the fires.そこで神さまたちは、たきぎに火をつけました。 The fires blazed up.火はぼうっともえ上がりました。

The eagle flew into the fire and was burned.ワシは火の中へ飛びこんで、やけてしまいました。

As soon as Loki put the nut down, it changed to Idun.ロキが木の実を下におくと、木の実はすぐにイズンにもどりました。

The gods ate the beautiful golden apples and were young again.神さまたちは美しい金のリンゴを食べて、またわかがえりました。
