A Visit from St. Nicholas

The children were nestled all snug in their beds,子どもたちはベッドの中で、ぬくぬくと丸くなってねむり、While visions of sugar-plums danced in their heads;頭の中では、あまいおかしのゆめがおどっていました。And mamma in her kerchief, and I in my cap,お母さんはずきんを、ぼくはねぼうしをかぶって、Had just settled our brains for a long winter’s nap,長い冬の夜のねむりにつこうとした、ちょうどそのとき、

When out on the lawn there arose such a clatter,外のしばふで、ガタガタと大きな音がしました。I sprang from the bed to see what was the matter. Away to the window I flew like a flash,まどへ、いなずまのようにかけよって、Tore open the shutters and threw up the sash.

The moon on the breast of the new-fallen snowふったばかりの雪の上に、月の光がさして、Gave the lustre of mid-day to objects below,下にあるものを、まるでお昼のように明るくてらしていました。When, what to my wondering eyes should appear,そのとき、おどろくぼくの目にうつったのは、But a miniature sleigh, and eight tiny reindeer,なんと小さなそりと、8頭の小さなトナカイ。

With a little old driver, so lively and quick,そして、元気できびきびした、小さなおじいさんがたづなをとっていました。I knew in a moment it must be St. Nick. More rapid than eagles his coursers they came,ワシよりもはやく、トナカイたちはやってきました。And he whistled, and shouted, and called them by name:おじいさんは口ぶえをふき、さけび、名前をよびました。
Now, Dasher! now, Dancer! now, Prancer and Vixen!「それ、ダッシャー! On, Comet! on, Cupid! on, Donder and Blitzen! To the top of the porch! to the top of the wall! Now dash away! dash away! dash away all!”

As dry leaves that before the wild hurricane fly,かれ葉が、はげしいあらしの前にまいあがり、When they meet with an obstacle, mount to the sky;何かにぶつかると、空へとのぼっていくように、So up to the house-top the coursers they flew,トナカイたちは、屋根の上へとびあがりました。With the sleigh full of Toys, and St. Nicholas too.
And then, in a twinkling, I heard on the roofそれから、あっというまに、屋根の上から聞こえてきました。The prancing and pawing of each little hoof. As I drew in my head, and was turning around,ぼくが頭をひっこめて、ふりむこうとしていると、Down the chimney St. Nicholas came with a bound.
He was dressed all in fur, from his head to his foot,頭から足まで、毛皮の服を着ていて、And his clothes were all tarnished with ashes and soot;その服は、はいとすすで、すっかりよごれていました。A bundle of Toys he had flung on his back,おもちゃのつつみを、せなかにしょっていて、And he looked like a peddler just opening his pack.

His eyes—how they twinkled! his dimples how merry! His cheeks were like roses, his nose like a cherry! His droll little mouth was drawn up like a bow,ゆかいな小さい口は、弓のようににっこりまがり、And the beard of his chin was as white as the snow;あごのひげは、雪のように真っ白でした。

The stump of a pipe he held tight in his teeth,みじかいパイプを、歯でしっかりくわえ、And the smoke it encircled his head like a wreath;そのけむりが、リースのように頭をとりまいていました。He had a broad face and a little round belly,顔は大きくて、おなかは小さくてまるく、That shook when he laughed, like a bowlful of jelly.

He was chubby and plump, a right jolly old elf,まるまる太っていて、ほんとうにゆかいな、年とったようせいでした。And I laughed when I saw him, in spite of myself;そのすがたを見て、ぼくは思わずわらってしまいました。A wink of his eye and a twist of his head,かた目でウインクして、首をちょっとかしげたので、Soon gave me to know I had nothing to dread;何もこわがることはないと、すぐにわかりました。

He spoke not a word, but went straight to his work,おじいさんはひとことも話さず、まっすぐ仕事にとりかかり、And filled all the stockings; then turned with a jerk,くつ下をみんないっぱいにすると、くるりとふりむき、And laying his finger aside of his nose,指を鼻のよこにあてて、And giving a nod, up the chimney he rose;こくりとうなずくと、えんとつをのぼっていきました。

He sprang to his sleigh, to his team gave a whistle,そりにとびのり、トナカイたちに口ぶえで合図すると、And away they all flew like the down of a thistle. But I heard him exclaim, ere he drove out of sight,でも、見えなくなる前に、おじいさんがこうさけぶのが聞こえました。“Happy Christmas to all, and to all a good-night.”「みなさん、メリー・クリスマス。
